Spain - The postman only rings once

RESIDENTS in outlying neighbourhoods or in other peripheral areas of Nerja, have requested for an increase in the frequency of postal deliveries. They complain that on most occasions the postman only delivers once a week, which doesn’t comply with European law which ‘guarantees the right to receive mail deliveries every other day’.
Since the motorcycles used today usually don’t go much faster than 60 or 70 kilometres per hour, the only way to increase the service would be an investment in more staff.

Unions have made the situation known to their superiors, but so far no response has been received. "It is true that there is a crisis, but with 25,000 accumulated items, an explanation is required."

The press department for the Eastern Andalusia Postal Service rejected the need for more staff stating that “the volume of post has decreased by six per cent compared to the same time last year” and they “have 10 employees in the delivery service to Nerja, five on motorcycle and five on foot,” and that “delays can occur when there is a massive influx of post from companies or official institutions, creating a spike which usually returns to normal within a few days.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday July 13 a dozen post office staff held a protest at the Nerja Post Office (and across Spain) to complain about government cost cutting. One employee said “There are rumours of 15,000 job losses nationally, but the consequences could be felt here next month when the office limits it opening hours, closing in the afternoons.”

“Post office staff are under tremendous pressure because there is no cover for holiday or sick leave,” adds the employee.
