A major rival to Royal Mail in the UK postal market is to open a new hub in Northern Ireland later this year.

TNT Post, which currently handles 280 million items a month, plans to expand its UK workforce by a fifth and bolster its regional presence.

It also plans to invest £3m in sorting and processing technology.

TNT Post expects to have more than 1,000 employees in the UK following the recruitment drive, including new client managers and operational staff.

The business has a network of five regional offices and will extend this to cover the new hub in Northern Ireland in the autumn. It is also looking for a central distribution hub to boost efficiency and increase its capacity.

The Dutch-owned firm has won business from high-profile customers including Centrica and BT since entering the UK market six years ago.
