Jersey - Daily postal service too expensive

Your daily postal delivery in Jersey could soon be a thing of the past. The States think the service is too expensive and are looking at making it more efficient.

Options include a three day delivery or charging for the service. Some say efficiencies could be made in the salaries of Jersey Post bosses.

The world of communication has changed over the years. More often we're choosing e-mail over snail mail, so it's no surprise volumes of post have been falling 4 % every year since 2003.

Less mail going through Jersey Post, means less money in the business. And now the States say running the service six days a week is just too expensive.

Senator Alan Mc Clean, Economic Development Minister says,

'In this day and age where we have to be very careful about public money and how it's spent we need to make certain that Jersey Post is delivering value for money and is at the very least covering its costs.'

One way to do that is to reduce services.
The options the States are proposing include running a three day a week collection and delivery, offering a daily service for an extra charge or have a daily service from just six collection points. Those ideas are going out for consultation, but the initial response isn't good.

Indeed figures from last year show the head of Jersey post and the HR Director each got a pay rise of 25,000 pounds last year.
That's before 80 people were made redundant.
They say their pay has to reflect similar jobs in the market to attract quality managers.

Jersey Post Chief Executive Ian Carr says,

'We have to have the right people in place right through from postman to senior executives to actually deliver the changes we need to make a sustainable future.'

Even if you don't agree with managers earnings - the fact is Jersey Post is losing not just thousands but millions of pounds each year.
And as service cuts seem inevitable - you've got until the end of August to have your say on its future.
