[quote="sadlersbitch"]Police arrest Royal Mail manager involved in fatal collision online only
A post office manager driving a Royal Mail articulated lorry was involved in a fatal accident in Exeter this morning.

The collision, which occurred at 6.30am on the A379 Bridge Road, killed the 53-year old driver of an Astra van, and injured his passenger.

Police have arrested the driver of the lorry, a 46 year-old man from Newton Abbot, on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and investigations are ongoing. No one has been charged at this stage.

Devon and Cornwall police told Socialist Worker that driving conditions at that time were not unduly hazardous.

A rep at the Exeter mail centre told Socialist Worker that there has been a spate of accidents involving managers and Royal Mail vehicles on strike days.

“Last week several vehicles being driven by managers at Exeter had their wing mirrors broken and one van was backed into a building in Plymouth. While on the picket line we even witnessed a lorry being driven by a manager with its tailgate down – which is potentially extremely dangerous,â€

This was a tragedy waiting to happen. These RM managers are either untrained, or haven't driven a lorry for a while. I do feel some sympathy for the driver of the lorry because although he shouldn't have been on the road, he can't really say no cos he'll lose his job. That last comment is not normally in my character cos i ain't manager friendly.
The press could spin it and say stuff like 'if you wasn't on strike, this wouldn't have happened', but the real facts are there.
IF LEIGHTON AND CROZIER WEREN'T SUCH A PAIR OF STUBBORN SELFISH MONEY FLEECING TOSSERS THEN THIS DISPUTE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED AND THIS POOR VAN DRIVER WOULDN'T HAVE DIED.
MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED PERSON. RIP

This is an accident that should not have happened.

It show that although we are on strike there is a lot of pressure on managers to get the job done.
Managers are not strike breakers, they are not part of the Union (at least ours aren't) and it is not their strike.

Fortunately, my being on strike does not make me to blame in any way for the tragedy in Exeter
I hope the press don't spin it against us.

My condolences to the families involved, one would think after some of the 'incidents' of managers driving vans and lorries with little recent or no experience during the first two strikes i.e. hitting gates, falling over when negotiating corners too fast and improperly loaded mail spilling out on the road, some lessons might have been learned which may have prevented this tragic accident. . . .

I have no doubt the government, Al, Adam and those managers and strike breakers who are working throught this dispute and thereby championing the system consider this a price worth paying in their battle against the unions much as Thatcher did when people died waiting for ambulances or dates for vital operations.

I think this should be known

Henry Charles Brown, known as Harry Brown, was 56-year-old and from St Thomas in Exeter. He was married with five children.

He was not just a statistic but a husband and father

Please Royal Mail, look at the consiquences of your actions, stop these dangerous practices NOW by just talking to the CWU

Perhaps - If this manager has not received any refresher training they may have a case.
