LTB: Sell Off

Post by fishtank »

TO: THE BRANCH SECRETARY

Dear Colleague

COALITION GOVERNMENT PROPOSES TO PRIVATISE ROYAL MAIL

Branches will have seen the reports in the press and media that the Coalition Government is drawing up proposals to privatise Royal Mail.

This is confirmed in the text of the programme published by the Coalition Government (copy attached).

The document, on Page 10, commits the Coalition to an injection of private capital and separation of Post Office Ltd.

The National Executive will be placing an Emergency Motion before Annual Conference aimed to commit the whole of the Union to campaign against this proposal.

Any enquiries on this LTB should be addressed to the General Secretary’s Office quoting the reference GS 11.0

Yours sincerely

BILLY HAYES DAVE WARD
General Secretary Deputy General Secretary (P)

TONY KEARNS ANDY KERR
Senior Deputy General Secretary Deputy General Secretary (TFS)

We will seek to ensure an injection of private capital into Royal Mail, including opportunities for employee ownership. We will retain Post Office Ltd in public ownership.

I agree, we're all doomed this time because I'll find it hard to motivate anyone in my office to fight it

I agree aswell. No fight left in me now after the agreement. Think I'll join the 59,000 that could'nt be bothered to vote in the last ballot.

It's going to happen 100%,there is absolutly nothing anyone can do about it.
Hayes and the crew will do their best,a lot of money will be spent on it.

But you know it will be a waste of time.

Despite the grievances a lot of people have with the CWU ,we will need them even more when the deed is done.

Now is the time to bring new blood to the union and replace the old guard. We need to re-structure and get some talent to the top positions.

It would be funded from the political fund and branches will proably use their political funds as well, plenty of money for a campaign, just needs co ordination.

This is just the sort of thing a PF is designed for.

But will the campaign spook CON DEM MP's, Tarzan only had a rebellion of around a dozen Tory MP's .

Daz the PF raises less than a million a year from member contributions and is earmarked for many different causes and issues.
As far as branch accounts are concerned these will probably be the usual mixed bag of sensible accounting and horrendous overspend.
To fight this kind of campaign would take big money and the question the CWU will have to ask itself is...is it really a fight we can win? and if not is it a reasonable allocation of resources?
These are the harsh realities of living beyond your means for too long.
I personally believe the union would be better served trying to have some input into who buys us and under what terms rather than trying to stop the inevitable.

What would be the reality of part privatisation?

What changes would we see?

I agree. I don't see anyone in my DO wanting to strike knowing full well it is a waste of time.
That useless bastard Clegg has put the Tories in power. Now people will get what they didn't vote for.

59% of the voters voted for a political party who wanted to inject private capital (AKA sell off) into RMG, it was in Lib Dem manifesto and the Tories have never made a secret of their support for a sell off.

Two parties in government together with a majority of the vote and a majority of the MP's and the same policy on RM sell off/ownership.

Now people will get what they voted for.
