A CLAIM by more than 10,000 An Post staff for a 3.5pc pay rise has been rejected.
Assessors appointed by the Labour Relations Commission yesterday agreed the semi-state company cannot afford the increase.
It is understood the assessors accepted the company's claim that although it is profitable, payment of the last wage agreement would wipe out any profits made last year.
The pay claim would cost An Post in the region of €20m when operating profits were just €5.7m. The company's turnover of over €804m was down 5.4pc from €850m the previous year. Its pension fund has a deficit of €400m.
General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union Steve Fitzpatrick said he would seek some share of profits.
