The heat has been turned up in our office
Yesterday’s(Wednesday)posting from me Disheartened Watford Mail Center
Re-Current Dispute/IA/Casuals
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday see our mail center flooded with casuals doing nights lates and earlies.I know they have to work and make a living themselves,RM are using these casuals while postman are sitting at home wanting to do o/t.
The sorting quality is terrible,I have been bring back twice as many missorts from the DO’s I go to on my duty.Today(Wednesday)the delivery section in our mail center worked to their hours and used the vans,it was indeed mayhem.
I kid you not admin staff were taking out cut offs in their cars, seniour managerment as well were doing walks. One manager was loading up a crew bus with a whole delivery and two cut offs,he was given 4 casuals to assist him,I think they were Polish,so there’ll be helpful then.
The main point of this posting is at the moment there seems to be a bottomless pit of casuals,so we all know whats going to happen on strike days, coach loads of casuals will be shipped in.
I have 29 years service in,sometimes I have not always agreed with the unions plans/ideas but I will of course adhere to the strike dates, but I do hope the meeting between CWU and John Hutton(Trade & Industry)go well on Monday.AL & AC are employed by the government so why aren’t the government telling their employee’s to knuckle down and talk to CWU.
Resolve will of course weaken,we know that as do the CWU not to mention Royal Mail will also be aware of this as well.

Watford Mail Center
After yesterdays fiasco at our mail center yesterday which see managers taking mail out in their own cars ect ect.One manger took 4 Polish girls out to do one walk plus a couple of cut offs, left the yard at noon, only to find out the casuals were due to finish at 2pm,so had to get them back to catch their coach that ships them around.Another manager locked the keys in the back of the van,no spares, van towed back to the yard and engineers had to break in to the van.
The staff in the delivery section once again exercised their right to use the RM transport and have their pouches dropped off(very few pouch box’s)There were loads of packets left from yesterday as the acceleration drivers did’nt get time to do many,so todays will cause yet more packets to be held up.
Today(Thursday)RM decided to cancel the lunch time collections and have all the 12.30 start drivers down on the deliveries to do the cut offs,as one can only imagine the drivers were not happy, but as far as I know have proceded with the instruction under union advice. This must off disappointed the RM as I am sure they wanted to esculate things by suspending someone and having the rest of the mail center out on unofficai Industrial Action.
In the course of my duty which includes runs to DO’s,then after breakfast I clear the dock and help load the 2nd class despatch I see loads of casuals once again coached in,this was at noon so RM have got these people in to clear the walks as well.
The fight is well and truly on…..methinks.

But Royal Mail do not have any money, so where does the money come from to pay them and even hire a coach to ferry them around, maybe they are failed asylum seekers waiting at calais.

The DTI can initiate criminal prosecution against the employment business. The maximum penalty is a fine of up to £5,000 per offence and a 10-year ban in carrying out an employment business.strangler wrote:Can someone confirm whether it`s true that Royal Mail get fined £5,000 per agency worker used on strike day, in addition to what they pay the agencies?
In addition, a tribunal, on an application by the secretary of state, may make an order prohibiting a person (including a company) from carrying on or being connected with the carrying on of an employment agency or employment business for up to 10 years on the grounds that the person concerned is unsuitable because of misconduct or any other sufficient reason.

re: 2 days not having to pay posties
Multiply 130,000 x £350 x 2
Probably RM are using some of the money not paying those on strike?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the formula should be 130,000 X £350 divided by 5 multiplied by 1 day per week. That of course doesn't take into accoount part time workers which is only a proportion of £350, and those on sick and day off which probably represents about 20%.
Not an inconsiderable amount but not quite as much as you are portraying.

A standard panic measure from RM as usual. Bring in casuals and make the business look even more foolish than it does now by not sitting down with the Union and making excuses not to.
The cost implications are frightening, it would have just been more sensible to just get us on board instead of making us out to be the bad guys in all of this. Why can't anyone in government see that these two "2 day workers" are not interested in making Royal Mail work.
WTL "bs" changes from week to week depending on what they think is right, not what is actually right.

This is the law, but no business is ever punished for actually using strike breakers.evilc wrote:The DTI can initiate criminal prosecution against the employment business. If agency workers are foreign, they may not realise they are being used as strike breakers. A lot of countries actually have more union/class conscious workers than Britain, the union movement has been very big in Poland. Could the CWU help with polish language leaflets for them say? The Dahl Jenson builders strike immigrant workers struck in solidarity with british builders, for example.

I think RM will get away with using agency casuals, I'm sure they have knocked up some paperwork to say they are actually RM casuals.........law unto them selves
