manual handling

Post by steviemac »

How often should we review manual handling training? Is this a dvd video yearly at WTL or in another form? Where can the info be found? LAP is fiercly guarded by manager so unknown if info contained within this, Area rep aware of lack of communication.

There is no firm rule about this. You
will need training if new lifting aids are
introduced, or there are changes to the
method of work. To maintain skills and
awareness, refresher courses should
be run; it might useful to combine these
with a review of the risk assessment.

in the 1992 regs - i'm sure it said "manual handling training" every 2 years (min).

...but risk assessments must be done...when an accident occurs, or on an annual basis, and training in the "safe systems of work" (which are subsequent to any risk identified)

- the SSoW are how that particular risk should be tackled so to avoid accidents and injury!

if you feel there is a risk - inform your Area Safety rep or Unit Safety rep

or if you don't have one - you can write to the area safety manager/adviser or area safety committee about your concern, but keep a copy of the letter, or copy it to someone in authority in the cwu.

failing that, you can report it to HSE? you should have a H+S notice up in your workplace detailing who to report to...EHS or the local authority (maybe environmental health dept)

area rep suspects every 3 years hence clarification, situation arose when accelerating HCT and bikes requiring 2 people to lift on and off vans. Nobody injured and training on handling was raised by manager , all gone a bit quiet on time limits between last dvd on manual handling at WTL. Will put pressure on to revisit dvd and start to record dates and attendees viewing the training dvd.
