This is a letter sent to all "Unison" members this week ;-

CROYDON UNISON
CONSULTATIVE PAY BALLOT

VOTE TO REJECT THE MISERABLE OFFER-
UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACCEPT A PAY CUT!

We've been offered 2% for this year's pay award by our employers.
With the Retail Price Index currently at a level of about
4.5% [ it was 4.8% not long ago ], we're being offered a pay cut in
real terms. Pay is increasing across the economy by 3.6%

A strong vote to reject should make our employers think again. If
they don't, we'll be balloted to formally reject the offer and take
industrial action. WE HAVE TO BE PREPARED TO DO THAT.

The Government want to use public sector workers to force down
pay settlements and control inflation. But that means we lose out
relative to other workers-especially the rich ones in the City who
get far more in Christmas bonuses than we get in a whole year!

That's why we're looking to take co-ordinated action with all the
other public sector unions, so we'd be out alongside postal
workers, teachers, civil servants and others in real united action.

UNISON nationlly is recommending that you reject the offer.

We deserve a decent wage for the valuable services we provide-
vote to reject the offer and be prepared to take industrial action to
get what we deserve.

Im sure we have some Unison members on our first picket, so they are starting locally. It is good news though.

Lets keep our powder dry but keep all the workers Unions together....

Labour started a movement Now let the bastards feel how the movement works now they have jumped ship!!!!

I'm London local govt unison, we're consulting pre-ballot on the offer, we're going to reject I'm sure, when there'll be a national ballot for strike action.

It's a shame our union's lagging behind you guys and the PCS, if we were all together from the beginning we'd stand a much better chance of winning this quick.

I hope those elected as national officers see the sense in a united campaign. Unfortunately there iasn't much of a tradition of this in Britain, unlike France and Spain with the CNT.

welcome aboard steve thanks for filing us in. there was a leeds public sector pay campaign meeting last nite with unison local governmnet and health reps there, and we agreed the other unions need to speed up the ballots - for instance PCS rep reported (with massive frustration) that the Pcs is taking all august for a consultation of its members (yet again!) on what kind of strike action they want to do!

The NUT leadership is thinking about strikeing in Jan 2008 though the reps there last night were dead set against that and wanted to speed it up (they can't really do any action till sept when teachers start coming back. Other unions have seen the leaders stall on conference decisions with indicative ballots, etc.

We need to start pressuring our leadership in the CWU and all the unions Unison included to call an emergency meeting - a council of war - to speed up the balloting and name the date for a united strike. What do you think are the chances and whats the feeling in your branch?

Seems to me we need a Publicsectorchat.com web board too!!! Unite the public sector struggles - All out until all claims are settled!

I whole heartedly agree with all on this thread. We have also a R.C.N rejection on nurses pay rise. Where oh where is the leadership of the left when you need it. Mr Crow please give your R.M.T skills to our lot at the C.W.U. i somehow feel they havent the balls to arrange a full all out strike.

I dunno I wouldn't put too much faith in Crow. He has to act especially militant or else his members won't put up with him, but he's still done stuff like call off strikes at the last minute with no consultation. A guy I know quit the RMT exec after a strike over safety got called off, which had like an 80-something percent vote in favour. I think we can only rely on ourselves, and push for the strongest action possible.

Cheers I wasn't aware of that. Anyone know what the deal is with non-teaching school staff?

Well I think my branch would like that, but my branch is a more militant than the leadership. Our branch position on pay was actually for a fixed pay rise, not a percentage. I think this is a much better idea, as it brings us all closer together and helps the lowest-paid most, not the highest.

That might be a good idea, the main worry would be it might die on its arse, not get the critical mass to get going like this board has, because there's not the same sense of urgency as there is in the post. I mean most of the people in my department weren't even aware we were due a pay "rise" in April anyway

Lecturers in Northern Ireland (UCU) rejected a 2% pay deal:
