hi all
argument going on at work about powers of royal mail vans.
2 colleagues are saying regardless of accidents driver being drunk anything at all the van cannot be stopped by police
but has to have them follow on to depot or police station.
2 other guys are laughing at them saying what if driver is drunk and mowed down 2 ppl cant the police stop and arrest on spot
i thought i would come to you guys and clear this up ...is it a urban myth ?

police can stop you, they can stop anyone. With royal mail drivers its rare but they can pull you over if they have a good reason, they are the police its their job if the law is being broken then they can stop a royal mail van. I know 2 or 3 drivers been stopped.

Re: royal mail vans
As coxie says they can stop us,but the can't search us(the van) unless we are at our office,or there is a manager present.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

My experience is that altough the Police can in theory stop us they do have the sense to respect us in our role of conveying the Royal Mail and routinely have the sense to turning a blind eye to matters such as speed, roadworthyness of vehicle and regulations regaring such matters as seat belts.

We got told in our 'huddle' the other week that the police can stop you but you are not to get out of the vehicle, they are not allowed to search the van and they have to follow you back to your yard.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

My understanding is if you are unsure they are police officers you have the right to ask them to follow you to the nearest DO or police station.

If you are an HGV driver delivering bonded goods - fags, spirits, ect, - and a copper wants to pull you over they have to contact your office and get them to authorise you to stop - or something like that
Your not even allowed to stop of a piss driving those

Just had to reply to this one
We can be stopped by the police and they do not ignore us speeding, on average one postie a year from our office gets a speeding fine. The information comes through to the manager and he has to identify who was driving on that day and pass the info on to the police. If the records are not up together in theory the manager has to take the fine on his license.

Which handily highlights the big hole in CDV deliveries when 2 nominated drivers are on the same duty.Senior Service wrote:Just had to reply to this one

Re: royal mail vans
Now this has got me thinking how long will it take for the DOM's to lose their license under the totting up of points system and then if they continue to have to take the blame they would be speeding whilst disqualified!
Bring on CDV's

Re: royal mail vans
To my knowledge,,, You can be stopped at anytime by the police as previously stated you do not have to get out of the van however.. In a recent Police Stop in the Bristol area a Postman was stopped for speeding after going through a speed trap... He was pulled over and the police actually explained the situation and said he would need to drive back to the mail centre where his van could be secured before he could be interiewed further.. They also accepted the copy of his driving licence held by the mail centre instead of his origanal.. The driver got away with 3points as well after doing 57 in a 40!!!
