A MELBOURNE postie who bounced off a car's bonnet, his head smashing the windscreen, says he was ordered back to work within weeks for "light duties" despite a neurosurgeon advising him to stay at home.
Trevor Crawford, 57, said the accident left him with haemorrhaging in his brain, a broken rib, and dizzy spells that left him nauseated.
But an Australia Post-affiliated doctor ordered him back to work for 45 minutes a day, with a 15-minute break after every 15 minutes' work.
"It was ridiculous. I was told if I couldn't do that then I wasn't serious about working," Mr Crawford said.
"I felt I was being bullied into accepting the situation, especially when they suspended my compensation for treatment due to conflicting medical advice," he said.
Mr Crawford gave evidence at a Senate inquiry into how Australia Post treats injured and sick employees.
The Communications Electrical Plumbing Union has for several years accused Australia Post of pushing injured employees back to work early to trim compensation costs.
Nearly three years after the accident, Mr Crawford is still a full-time postal delivery officer in Mooroolbark and still has occasional dizzy spells.
National president of the Communications Electrical Plumbing Union, Ed Husic, told the inquiry that Australia Post's policy was unlawful and amounted to bullying.
"Australia Post is doing something no other company can do, using its own law to act outside the law, forcing employees to use their doctors," he told the Herald Sun.
But Dr David Milecki, director of InjuryNET, which manages Australia Post's treatment services, cited research indicating that time off work, particularly if unnecessary or prolonged, can lead to adverse physical, psychological, social and financial effects.
"Our practitioners form opinions based on a clinical assessment, evidence-based practice and their knowledge of the workplace," he said.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
