Assessment Specialist - PSL

Post by Jed »

Hi there,

Could anyone give any advice or help with regards to applying for a job as a postman with Royal Mail, i signed up a few months ago to receive any job alerts via email, i did apply for a job back last year as a postman and was quite shocked after i filled in my application (been working in a factory for 24 years and not used to filling in application forms and applying for jobs... :nervous ... :nervous ...) that the next stage of the application was a online test, the first one was ok where you match up the postcodes, but i found the second one a bit diffucult (with the time they give you against a stopwatch) trying to match up the different street names and postcodes which were jumbled up to make it even more diffucult against a clock on the side of the screen, sometimes by the time you tried to match them up, the time had elapsed and the next one had popped up.

I did show it to a postman i know and even he couldn't match them up in the time allowed, anyway after a few practice tests i done the two tests, then completed a personality questionaire and submitted them in, as i said the first one was ok but i did struggle a bit with the second one, i waited weeks for a reply and was told that i had been unsuccessful, so do you need to pass these online tests with very high scores with the Assessment Specialist firm PSL to have a chance of getting to the interview stage...???...and can you find out why you were unsuccessful (so you can try and improve your chances for future job alerts)one other thing i noticed on the form as well was have you been unemployed for the last 6 months, so i was thinking do they favour people who have been out of work longer, any advice or guidance on applying or what they are looking for would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks... ...

The only advice I can offer, and I'm being sincere, is to make absolutely sure that you can't find anything else, because this job is hell now, has very little going for it, job security has gone for a burton, any pleasure a postie derived from doing the job has been successfuly eradicated.
In short, only go for it if you're really desperate, and I mean, really desperate.

Jed I never did the on-line test so can't comment on it.

I would suggest keeping on eye on local papers or the JC noticeboard and apply for positions from them.

I am guessing though that in your area they had a set quota of recruitments and probably had more applying than they needed. In this case you may have passed the test but not been within the top 20% or so and they offered positions only to those that were.

Keep on trying is my best advice.

If you failed the test you may get preferential treatment for a managerial post.

Good luck :dance

Yeah just keep re-applying and make sure you have plenty of practice goes before you do the test for real, the more you do it the easier it gets, because it is the same test all the time so it become familiar, you will find RM have a big turnover in recruitment so jobs come up all the time, good luck mate, and remember you will only ever get part-time hours, so if that will do you it is not a bad job once you get use to it.

I did the online test, it wasn't too difficult, but I did practice for over an hour first. Just keep trying.

Are you sure you can't get a proper job? I'm wishing I'd held out a bit longer for a proper full time job. All you'll get is 25 hrs a week, which is no good if you have a family and mortgage, unless of course, you have another job, work for yourself in the afternoons or something.

I was led to believe that it was part time to start, and I'd get made full time in a year or so. It's been over two now...

Is it only via the internet that you can apply for Royal Mail jobs, as i have noticed that the jobs are now being advertised in the local Jobcentre, what if someone walks into the jobcentre and wants to apply for a job(and hasn't got internet access)...??...i suppose they would be given the use of the internet on site to apply.

"one other thing i noticed on the form as well was have you been unemployed for the last 6 months"

RM could be asking this as they may be party to one of the schemes where the Government pay a company xxx weeks of wages for any new employees taken on who are classed as Long Term Unemployed (ie over 6 months)

Even if the Jobcentre doesn't let them, they can use thier local Library. I know that mine lets you, so I think it's safe to assume that every Library does.

I can't remember what it's called (it's been a while), but when I was unemployed. After 6 months, I was allowed to go to somewhere to get free access to newspapers, stationary, phones, etc.. If it still exists, that will probably provide Internet access too.

Yes, that's it, thanks. Does it still exist?
Or was it the victim of Government cutbacks?

It would seem to be more a voluntary/community scheme now.....

Though some local authorities still seem to be involved
