Does anybody know whether we are actually entitled to any compassionate leave even for a day?
My father in law died last week and my wife is the next of kin, so has nobody other than me to support her through this.
The funeral is not until next Wednesday, but when I asked for this day off I was told that she would get back to me( DOM).
Apart from a distinct lack of compassion, I surely shouldn't have to wait for this DOM to let me know if I can go to my own father in law's funeral.
I would like to go back to her and say that I am entitled to be off and am only telling you to be courteous, but I don't know if it is up to the Manager's discretion or not.

Re: FUNERAL ENTITLEMENTS
tell them that your wife is the only child and that she is in bits (understandable)
tell them that you have to make all the funeral arrangements etc
you will be entitled to 1 week with pay
check the downloads section
hope this helps

Re: FUNERAL ENTITLEMENTS
My old DOM always used to ask "Are you responsible for making the funeral arrangements?"
If you answered yes you always got the time off, which varied between 1 and 7 days depending if it was local or away from home town.
