Bridgwater postal strike settled.

Post by NEWS »

THE stalemate between Bridgwater's angry postal workers and Royal Mail was broken this week as union bosses and managers brokered a deal, the Mercury can reveal today (Tuesday).

Nearly one hundred protestors held a strike over the Fathers Day weekend (June 15 to 18) outside the Friarn Street delivery buildings over the introduction of new working practices.

A total of 140 manager were scrambled to the offices to try and deal with the post over the period, while the campaigners held court outside in the street, But this week the town's office Communications Workers Union representative Joe Gray said a meeting this week with the branch secretary and the Royal Mail area manager had produced results.

"The Bridgwater dispute is now over for the time being," he revealed.

"We took it to members and it was 64 for the agreement, five against and three abstained.

"Royal Mail wanted to cut three full-time jobs to part-time, but we have managed to save two of those three.

At the risk of letting the truth get in the way of a good story.

The strike was mainly because the night shifts were taken out, and the jobs went to part time.

The night shifts are still gone, and the next recruits to the office will be part time.
