we have some duties in our office that work a long short monday and a long thursday.
they start at 17:30 on a thurday work till 05:30 friday morning and are then back in at 21:30 friday night
so whilst we are on strike they will have some bodies in the office who are officially not on strike?

If we don't get anywhere with this next Friday,we'll have to escalate the action.Personally I'd go for an all out........................................................................................................................................................................ starting tomorrow.

Let not forget what management said in the press before the strike - that they were indeed prepared to weather 6 months of one day strikes and rely on support for the strikes to wane eventually . We appear to be falling into just that trap .

The union have planned for industrial action that minimalises the financial loss to its members - as an aside that is why no Friday and Monday joint strike because wages department can dock both days off the same weeks wage . And remember that for the Mail-centres at least , lost wages are being made up by double shifts - there is no overtime ban in place and the back-logs are being cleared up when we get back .

IMHO , what is necessary is more imaginative actions . Calling us out in sections , for instance . Drivers , one day - APCs the next - DOs the other . Even within the APC having just sections that rely on trained staff , the CFCs MTTs FCTs being called out , the manual sorters another time , warehouse-men some other time . The cumulative effect would be to prolong the disruption to the mail system . Guerrilla action rather than frontal assaults .

What is needed of course is the overtime ban to be strictly imposed , not only a voluntary one , and self-discipline to avoid an all-out when management try try to provoke it by suspensions and the such .

Wouldn't working to rule for an entire month f**k them up just as bad. At least that way you'd still be getting a basic wage whilst leaving them in the s**t.
Only trouble with that is getting everyone to agree to do it. It'd be easier for people to *scab* and do overtime than it would for them to cross a picket line.
Working to rule only suits stroppy b-stards like unit reps & people who are willing to stand up for their rights.
The trouble is as long as there is the pound sign, that WILL dictate what people will do, out in the big wide world unfortunately there are people who will KILL for money let alone go on strike for it!
From what I've seen new people entering the job have'nt got the balls to stand up for themselves,

Agree with you. I actually think they ask certain questions in the interviews that give them an indication as to how much testicular fotirtude the applicants have.
That way they can hire the ones that are less likely to cut off and more likely to not claim docket, come in early and use their own vehicle on delivery.
Coming in early was a particular bone of contention with me a few years ago. More so when I was on nights and was seeing AG's coming in nearly an hour before their official start time. After several *discussions* with management they admitted that the AG's were not in fact insured to be on the shop floor until 15 minutes before their start time. All the early starters were informed of this. Yet only a few decided not to come in so early anymore.
These are the sort of people the management want to employ as they'll save them thousands over a year. Think about it. Call it an hour a day, that's roughly 35 quid a week. Times that by 10 people doing it, that's 350 quid a week. Times that by 52 weeks a year. Without a calculator that comes to seventeen and a half thousand pounds a year management save. Or the Ag's doing it, that comes to 1800 quid a year they're giving Royal Fail out of their own pockets.
Just like using cars on delivery. 1 AG was using his car on delivery so we told him he wasn't insured and should ask the line manager to clarify this. She/it told him he was insured. We told him to get that in writing, she/it then decided to tell him the truth that he wasn't insured. Yet another example of the stunts they'll pull to save a few quid.

Some of these people do 2nd jobs to maintain the lifestyle they want. This means some of them come in earlier so they can finish earlier and go out doing other paid by the drop courier roles. The days of the Postie job being the only one someone did has been changing for a while. Is that right?

I got the impression that Dave Ward is sofening his stance. By putting out a message saying that if you come to the table we'll call off the strike I reckon he will settle for xx,xxx job cuts (which happen to be a combination of frontline and managerial) and some of the other strings. Ultimately the theory of industrial action states that a compromise will be found, normally not to the absolute liking of anyone, but somehow presented as a win-win situation.

Well I read 2 lines of that and realised that this guy wrote this in 92 so its way out of date and its full of "look at me I'm clever" language. Sorry F0zz I now you meant to educate me but I don't want to waste my time reading it. Perhaps you could do a quick précis of it for us.

Just a thought but do you reckon that the CWU are a bit superstitious as they decided to strike from 7.00pm on Thursday instead of 3.00am on FRIDAY 13th . Dum DUm DeDUm.
