Why are you on strike?

Post by CuriousCustomer »

You've probably answered this question a million times on here so forgive me for asking again...

But what are the actual reasons you're on strike? Over the past week or so we've been bombarded with "news" about the the postal strike but no cold hard facts about why you're on strike, just a few brief snippets about "oppostion to modernisation"...

So can you please give me the reasons why...?

Bullying by managers if you don't finish your duty on time is one.

want part timers to be treated the same as full timers as the law states
i want part timers to have contracts which actually reflects the hours royal mail wants and bullies them to work
i want overtime payments ,i want to be able to earn SA rate if i do it
and i want my due holiday pay ,that i earn by law after being forced to work overtime, thats not volentary thats complusory with threats

if your a union rep pass these reasons on up..we donot want or will accept agreement that doesnt answer our issues not londons

and all of my office want start times back to what they were, before exective action changed them
how is it on saturdays they can get us the mail by 8.00am yet the rest of the week it 9.15 so we have to start later???????????
anyone know how or why?bitchface

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Curious customer, if you have time pop down to your local delivery office tomorrow and ask the guys and gals on the picket line , you may not agree with everything they say but you will find more truths than in most media articles which are often no more than recycled press releases from Royal Mail.

Yes, one of them

no. Royal Mail have made changes to our performance standards without agreement of the union.

We have an agreement thats been in place since 2004 which states that the test for our sorting rate is over 1 minute and your are expected to sort 31 items in that time at the IPS or 25 items in that time at your frame. this is difficult to do in i min. but RM have multiplied it by 60 and said you should do this in 1 hour, this is damn near impossable. They have incorparated this into a computer programe called indoor worktool.

They have a computer program called pegasus which has been used to measure outdoor work rate which the union is not in principle opposed to using but would like to have an input on the parameters used ie. walking speed, Royal mail use a walkspeed of 4 miles per hour.

They have redesigned all the duties using these programmes the upshot is it is practacally imposable to finish all your workload in the aloted time whilst folloing RM procedures, and if you don't follow RM procedures and somthing goes wrong then it's your fault........Now if you refuse to work overtime you are harrased, and i mean even if you once in 3 months refuse. Mean time managers by in large leave hours early most Saturdays in breach of there contract and have done since 2004!

i have worked in a main sorting office before and all i can say is what a easy number we all had. working for the royal mail is no different than alot of other jobs.
I can say all you will get out of this stike is more of you loosing your jobs, as with the current firm i work with they have moved all of there mail away from Roayal mail and what a better service we get.
at least i know people who are covering your jobs and getting paid for it, even though they are on less money doing the job without moaning.

stay on strike as long as you like as the longer you are on strike the less jobs there will be at the end of it and more money for other people in wages.

to be fair, some of the people who work for royal mail would not get a job anywhere else is that why they are so scared of there jobs?.

(this is my own personal view and no one elses)
makes me laugh all this stuff about replacing staff with Polish staff - one slight problem - understanding English , there would be a lot more complaints .

It's their money not there ( there as in " there is a place " ) - even the Daily Sport , Star and Sun have proof readers to check for these howlers . You sound if you've read those " newspapers " too often and can't take criticism of RM management .

Delivery Offices are a different world , APC's / MC's are called zoo's and factories by DO staff , so I'm afraid you're out of touch and in no position to comment / be judgemental .

Let's face it , not many people on here would come round to your works and tell you how to sweep up .

Most people would guess, that if they were being "harassed and bullied" by their manager every day it would be because they were not doing their job to his satisfaction, does this not tell you someting?
For years the postal service was a cushy number, now you have a management that is intent on making you work the way they want (which I believe is what you are paid to do) all you do is winge about it!
You all need to stop moaning, get off your lazy asses and work; there would be no problem then.
It seems that every time PO want to make a change in the way you work your union want more money for it. Why can’t you just do what you are paid for and deliver the post, the way you are told!
Delivering mail is after all an unskilled job, any fit person, who can read, could do it.
All this bull about heavy bags and more letters shows you are simply work shy, I see posties every day, most now have all sorts of barrows, trucks, carts etc and only actually carry a small amount of mail in a bag, it’s just more whinging!
I get fed up hearing about it, just get on and work!

I understand your frustrations but it's RM management, not the workers, who are responsible for this mess. It's unreasonable for management to set impossible targets for workers and then threaten the workers with disciplinary action for failing to meet those targets. Then management keeps cutting down on staff and expecting the existing workers deal with an ever-increasing workload. The only way the workers can do more is to put in extra time, for which I understand that they don't get paid. No wonder staff morale is so low. The postal workers had only three options: put up with it, resign or take a stand against it.

It's possible that some RM workers are at risk of losing their jobs because customers will take their business to rival delivery firms but it's a risk that the workers have chosen to take. The fact is RM workers deserve fair working conditions. If the working conditions are fair then we, the customers, benefit because we get a better quality of service.

Looks like I hit a sore point here with the polish, most of the polish speak better English than English people working at Royal Mail anyway and they are more polite.

Also I am a customer of Royal Mail, so in one way or another I pay you wages, even though you may be overpaid as it seems you spend most of your time on the internet posting on forums, do some work.

As for working in the sorting office I sorted mail and then did extra duties delivery mail due to fact the other lazy gits could not be bothered or it was not in their job description, lol

As for sweeping up I have someone to do that for me, oh and they make my tea.

I hope you get a nice redundancy package.
Are you sure it's Marty 2000 and not Mandy 2000. :wave
