Manager Threatens To Dock Wages in Small Bucks Town

Post by mustang »

Hi I am a Postie working in a small town in Bucks and my manager is recently threatening to dock wages if we posties do not carry out our "Absorbtion" overtime. This is extra duties that according to the original nationwide agreement with management should be carried out WITHIN the usual duty span and NOT enforced overtime. Most of our Office are not taking breaks running around like blue XXXXX flies in order to get finished within our correct duty time. This extra work has directly caused major injuries in the office and caused one postie too have a nervous breakdown. Enough is enough ! We dont mind a bit extra work BUT someone will be killed at this rate if we continue to accept this extra burden.

Welcome to RMC mustang :wave
First of all has your office got a local CWU rep?
He/she needs to get in with your Dom and tell him he is wrong and can not stop peoples wages if you dont absorb.
The national agreement clearly states Where time exists to carry out absorbtion, and this is where you guys have to play your part.
Do NOT start before your times.
Take your meal breaks.
Weigh all bags and trolleys and do Not carry or push overweight ones.
Do NOT use cars on delivery.
Do NOT cut corners for example running round like blue arse flies etc etc.
You must NOT refuse to absorb as it is a reasonable request, but if you do the above unless you have easy walks then you may not be able to absorb and finish you own duty within you duty time, remember NO manager can force you to work past your time.
If you Dom still insists you do this then get on to your Area CWU Rep asap and explain what is going on.
Good Luck.

Hi jonnyp,

Thanks for your great advice. Most of the office are trying to stick to what you say. The problem is that we have 11 non union posties who hoodwink the manager into thinking that the duties are easier than they are and do indeed come in early and tear about. The manager just will not be told and I for one are trying to keep to union rules. The posties who are sticking to the rules are routinely hassled by the manager. We desperatly need a revision in our office and that would maybe allow for some absorbtion to be achieved. We are told that we wont get a revision till after Christmas. We can not go through Christmas with absorbtion still in place. I told my manager to come out with me on my duty and time it. He says he hasnt got the time and will only listen to the non-union posties in the office one of which does indeed do the duty quicker than me but he does not do the duty properly and I get constant complaints after I follow him on the duty.

We do have a CWU rep who really is doing his best but we seem to be fighting a losing battle. The Area manager is equally as inflexible as our DOM and we will keep fighting on.

Cheers

Hi Jonnyp,

What a great idea ! An Individual Grievance Procedure against our DOM from at least 10 posties might just get Royal Mail Management to remove this guy. Trouble is some other poor office will have to put up with him !

Many Thanks for all your suggestions love the Forum by the way will keep you posted on progress with the good fight.

Cheers
