Lazy Postie

Post by TPO777 »

I've been in this new flat now for 2 months and for the second time today I caught him filling out a "Sorry, you were out" card before even venturing up the whole 12 stairs to my flat door. I wouldn't mind so much if he was willing to admit he was just being a tube but he was adamant he wasn't. Even threatened to report me to the police for being violent even though I was calm. I was fully in support of the strike but after seeing that this lad can't be bothered to deliver my stuff on the days he isn't on strike then I don't see how a strike for him is any different. Anyway my real question here is, is there anyone in particular it would be good to report this to? The man is useless he puts letters in the wrong box everyday and is just generally a lazy, arrogant prick.

As I said. I was calm. I never once swore to him, infact all I said was that if he didn't want to come up the stairs then he could just push our buzzer and I'd gladly come down to get the stuff. Whether he took it as sarcasm or not I'm not sure but it certainly wasn't meant that way. I appreciate the service he is delivering to me but for him to not be doing what he's supposed to and then turning it round so its me being the problem.

Did he have the item? I'ts much easier for us to deliver the item rather than have to write out the card and return the item to the DO.
If he didn't have it maybe he'd been instructed by management to leave the his large items or Recorded Deliveries behind in the Office so he could actually finish his walk on time.

Both times he has given me the item when I've gone down and spoken to him. Both times he's also just said he didn't think anyone was in. I asked if he knocked and he kind of mumbled at me. Neither item was particularly large btw just that they don't fit in the tiny mailboxes downstairs in out flat.

Maybe you should continue your support for the strike. It could well be that

A) Due to the pressure placed on him he is cutting corners, obviously he shouldn't, but there IS pressure placed on posties to complete a delivery as quick as possible. In some offices if you do not complete quick enough they either suspend you or dock your wages.

B) It could of been one of the 30,000 untrained strike breaking agency staff put in place by Royal Mail.
maybe he'd been instructed by management to leave the his large items or Recorded Deliveries behind in the Office so he could actually finish his walk on time.
And thats a very good C)

He should of explained himself better though obviously

If your letter boxes are downstairs then that is where he should deliver. We are not insured to deliver elsewhere. If he was to fall on the 12 stairs to your flat it would be his fault as the small letter boxes are his point of delivery.Every post round should be risk assessed by a manager and your stairs will not figure in that assessment. The time and motion study used to determine the length and duration of his duty will not take your steps into account. We deliver to the letter box not your front door.

All I can do is appologise , it's his job to ensure delivery,

Some days he will deliver to the door, some days not. As I said to him before he can just push the buzzer on his way in (he's pushing the one below it to get in anyway) and I will easily go down and get it.

The mail has to cross the threshold.Handing mail out to customers is a big no no.Try getting bigger letter boxes.

The mail box is built into the wall. Short of me ripping out everyones mailbox in order to install my own one so I can get things delivered there's not really much scope for getting a bigger one. Add to the fact I'm renting and not allowed home improvements its also likely to get me evicted. If he can't hand me it I can easily open the mailbox so he can place it inside before I reopen it to take it out. All the packages I've had fit in the box they just don't fit in the angle he has to put them in. For whats its worth though I really do appreciate him not forcing my things in so they break. Thank you all also for your insights into rules/regulation/explanations though. It's made me have more empathy for why he has to do things in certain ways.

I would try and sort it out with him with the same reasonable argument you have used here. People can get off to a bad start but it can often be easily rectified. Most posties will go out of their way to help.

Have a word with his manager, you will get the phone number on the back of the card.
