Aus Post - Big posties to be pulled off the road

AUSTRALIA Post plans to pull overweight posties off the road as their excess weight slows mail delivery.

Posties weighing more than 100kg will have to see a dietitian or be redeployed if they can't shed the kilograms, a draft Australia Post policy says.

It comes 18 months after a 90kg weight maximum for applicants was lifted to 105kg.

But the union has warned posties will walk off the job if staff are forced to reveal their weight.

The controversial proposed policy changes, include:

POSTIES will have to sign a statutory declaration every 12 months stating they weigh less than 100kg.

THEY must reveal how much they weigh if more than 100kg.

WORKERS will be redeployed to walking or bicycle delivery routes, or depot work if unable to bring their weight below 100kg.

SOME staff would be eligible for financial assistance to pay for weight loss advice.

CEPU branch secretary Cameron Thiele said there would be mass walkouts if there were forced weigh-ins.

"I have no hesitation, we are entering a (wage) bargaining period and if the case gets out of hand, we will walk off the job," he said. "It is pretty serious. We don't want to do it, we don't want people discriminated against because Australia Post doesn't want to improve working conditions."

Australia Post spokesman Alex Twomey confirmed there would be a review of maximum weight.

"We've been reviewing the policy, it's about how to make sure we've got a consistent approach, how riders can be safe and continue riding the (motor) bikes," Mr Twomey said.

He said the review would ensure employees were safe and no posties would be dismissed.

The Honda motorbikes have a maximum weight capacity of 145kg. That includes rider, 15-20kg of safety equipment such as helmet and boots and mail.

Australia Post wants the 90cc bikes to carry about 30kg of mail, so that makes posties more than 100kg a liability.

One postie, who did not wish to be identified and weighs 108kg, said he would prefer to quit than be redeployed to an indoors job.

He said he would try everything to lose his extra kilos.

"But I feel my job is at risk because I am above-average height," he said.

good job Billy is over here and is hardly likely to go back in uniform . Joking apart I've seen somebody that was on a " green card " job and management thought he was not really productive , to make things " look straight " they sent him to Weightwatchers but they later sacked him as it was " his fault " . The union took them to ET and won £23,000 - the line in the staff paper was quell surprise ! - that management were justified , it just cost more than they expected to get rid of him :hmmmm .

I think there was something in Voice about a driver in Scotland who was apparently too fat , it took the union two years to get him back as RM certainly wanted shut of him and RM had to pay two years or more wages back .

If RM really wanted rid of him , they should have done it properly but that's hardly going to happen .

If they brought in a weight limit then most of the managers would be out on their ears  maybe that's the way they intend to cull them, you exceed the maximum weight limit :chuckle (or in the case of a couple of managers I know, only one person on the scales at a time :chuckle :chuckle ).

PS. I was always taught that you NEVER ask a woman her age or weight because they really don't like that  :nervous
