i hope Labour totally abandons RM privatisation in its next manifesto, although i disagree with a lot of things that Labour has done in its time in office , we need a stark chioce at the next election otherwise why bother voting . however , with Mandelson in charge i have my doubts .

What difference would it make?

What difference would it make if New Labour totally abandoned the Privatisation of RM in their next Manifesto?
They had a Manifesto commitment to keep RM Public, for the last Election. They attempted to break that commitment. So what makes you think that they wouldn't do that again?

If someone came to me, and told me that they could take me to the Crock of Gold at the end of the Rainbow. I'd be more inclined to believe them, than a New Labour Government which told me that they would abandon plans to Privatise RM. It's the last real "Cash Cow" they have left, and they need the money. :hmmmm

as yet they havnt privatised RM have they ? do we believe it is because of the economic situation as Mandelson would have us believe or because 130 or so Labour MPs have put pressure on the Government with regards the vote etc ?. probably a bit of both i would say. the Politicians and the elite are on a very sticky wicket at the moment because they have been found out to be a morally corrupt bunch of thieves.they now have to be seen to do the right thing to regain public faith and IMO if the Labour says they will not privatise the RM in its next manifesto they would be foolish to go against that if they did get in next election.

I think back-bench opposition certainly played a part, but as Andy2007 pointed out 'it's the last real Cash Cow they have left'.
In business, as in the housing market, if you're trying to sell an asset for the maximum value possible, selling-up in the teeth of a recession / house-price slump is stupid. The realisation of that will have finally dawned on Mandelson when the only bids put in were for far less than he was hoping to raise.

Postponing the sale of 30% of RM 'buys off' the backbenchers and is the politically expedient thing to do. But it still leaves the door open for him to push the sale through, when asset values are healthier, and after RM have boosted profitability (made cuts) pushing major change through by executive action.

i agree with what you are both saying, this has only been put on the back-burner. however, selling off the RM will only raise a small amount needed to help pay back the money given to the banks etc, several generations to come will foot the bill for this . not only that the privatisation and franchising out of every service etc going ,is now seen by many people as really a means to enrich the board members and shareholders, even Peter Hitchens on question time last night said the railways should be re-nationlised. Labour has talked about building more council houses, scrapping ID cards and stopping the Trident upgrade. these are u-turns in their policies and obviously money saving exercises but these are policies that many people on the left will welcome. we need to put more pressure on the Labour Party to become a viable alternative to the other parties , to return to its working class roots and maybe with those other policies keeping RM in the public hands would be a good start.

Victory my derriere. RM won't remain public. You're kidding yourselves if you think that. It will still be sold as soon as the bid is right or they find a short term deal. If Labour lose, and every chance they will, the Tories will push that one hard. Ken Clarke wants to privatise the whole lot remember. What it does mean is a tough year ahead and, if you choose to add it into the mix, money lost through strike action and no budging from either Brydon or the present government.

:chuckle Your powers of prediction leave a lot to be desired NT :chuckle Sorry to remind you ,but you did say that us posties were doomed to utter defeat in the 2007 dispute, and you were wrong.
You did say that there was not a hope in hell of us posties getting this Tory govt. to back down on on privatisation ,and you were wrong. On both occasions you said RM and the govt would not budge one inch and you were wrong :chuckle . Clearly your analysis leaves much to be desired ,perhaps you should factor in the power of solidarity and and the simple fact that ,the workers united will never be defeated :chuckle Cos theres a lot more of us than there is bonus culture state aid dependent parasites :Very Happy

and he seems to have forgotten this quote of his......Night Tonic wrote:
I suppose Axeman, that when working to rule and strike action actually equals efficiency or even job protection, you might have a valid argument. Not seen it yet - ever. I've made it plain I think the CWU as a limp biscuit with some dim members in its fold, but I don't see industrial action as the answer. That just makes sure we lose more jobs. I'm entitled to that point of view as much as you are yours.

because look what happened at Lindsey................Next image Date: 28/6/2009 16:14:39

Oil Refinery Dispute

The bitter dispute by contract workers which has led to wildcat strikes at power stations and refineries across the country is set to come to an end after a deal was agreed to resolve the row over jobs.

Hundreds of workers will hold a mass meeting outside the Lindsey oil refinery in North Lincolnshire on Monday morning and will be recommended by union officials to accept the agreement which was thrashed out during marathon talks last week.

The workers have been on unofficial strike for weeks after complaining that 51 employees were being laid off at Lindsey, which is owned by energy giant Total, while other contractors on the site were hiring staff.

Thousands of workers across Britain took sympathy strike action in support of the Lindsey workers at up to 15 sites.

Mr Whitehurst said he expected the Lindsey workers to accept the deal and march back into work

Unions said they had achieved their objective of finding other jobs for the 51 workers as well as rescinding dismissal notices sent to 647 employees at the site who have been on strike.

The unions have also won a guarantee of no victimisation against workers across the country who took sympathy action.

Lord Haw Haw - " Hellmail calling " :left: - or RMC's equivalent of Hanoi Hannah / The Dragon Lady :hmmmm - This one also comes to mind , only it would be a Hellmail Forever tattoo not Scotland Forever :Very Happy

I'm sorry but I tend to be very skeptical about anything to do with Hellmail and " mistakes were made " in 2007 on Postman Fluffy .

The irony is that RM is being run like something out of North Korea or the final days of Berlin as the Red Army got nearer & nearer but without the petrol , revolvers and cyanide tablets - unfortunately :whistle - only joking !

Well we're a whole lot further forward aren't we. So much so we don't need to go on strike. Everyone is happy. When we're sold, which we will be, your own predictions won't be worth the space they occupy. Lets see RM buckle under strike action - not.

Not buckle - Just honour the agreements they signed up to and treat us with respect. I certainly would not call the buckling.
