Lets not get to excited , we have to prove the case beyond all doubt that RM can be a public sector success before the conditions for a sell off come back into play.

agree with the second part of that. They have only delayed the postal services bill, it will be back the pension aspect of the bill has to pass into law prior to June 2010 ( the last date that RM can legaly have the next actuarial valuation of the pension) to save the goverment from a £ 10 Billion bill!!!

The Economy is actually in a better, not worse, situation than it was when they first came up with the Bill. So it's got to be the POLITICAL conditions. In other words: We have the opportunity to keep the conditions wrong for the sell off.

In my opinion the shelving of the sell off was inevitable but is not a victory in its self. You see when we campaigned to have a review of compeition and postal services act we did so because Post Comm had introduce competition ahead of anyone in Europe and it was having a damaging effect on Royal Mail`s ablity to cope.

The Hooper report confirmed that the pension issue had to be resolved and recommended the removal of Post Comm and criticised the Management of Royal Mail. Mandleson went even further and said if didt think we had the gene pool in the Uk to run a postal service.

7 months on and we made him climb down on the sell but his statement yesterday in the House of Lords shows he is still bitter at the CWU and says that the Bill was a whole package and nothing will be done on pensions or off com or several other issues.

Without a resolution to the Pension issue our Royal Mail cannot survive in the long run. In fact Donald Brydon the Post Office Chairman is quoted as saying that the pension scheme may even have to be closed to exisiting members.

So it is far from a victory. Now we will see if our Leaders push forward and fight for the resolution of the pension issues and regualtion issues. If they dont then this shows that this was more about saving the Labour party link then saving the members within the CWU.

Quite right. Why do you think, dispite the motions on the pad, the subject of disafiliation to the Labour Party wasnt addressed at conference? You scratch my back Billy and I will scratch yours Gordon.
We still have one hell of a fight on our hands to keep this great institution in public ownership. The battle may be over but the war still rages.
