MP SAYS LEGISLATION IS NEEDED FOR USO
BY DAVID PERRY

Published: 12/06/2009

THE government was warned last night not to let left-wing attacks on part- privatisation of the Royal Mail delay legislation needed to preserve its universal delivery obligation (USO).

Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP John Thurso spoke out shortly before Commons leader Harriet Harman confirmed the Postal Services Bill, with its proposal to sell a 49% stake in the business, is not going to be pushed through the Commons any time soon.

Lord Thurso, the Liberal Democrat Business spokesman, said there are parts of the bill dealing with powers to regulate postal services which are needed to ensure the USO on Royal Mail requiring daily deliveries everywhere in the UK at the same cost.

Business Minister Pat McFadden said: “Regulatory change in postal services is necessary, and the proposal in the bill is to put at the heart of the new regulatory system the maintenance of the universal service – the six days a week, one-price-goes-anywhere service that is at the heart of our postal system.”

He added that other changes in Royal Mail are needed if the USO is to be maintained.

Vital

Lord Thurso said later that enhanced regulatory powers are needed, among other things, to require Royal Mail to restore daily deliveries on the Ardmore peninsula where half a dozen families have to collect their own mail from a box on the main road because postmen have been told not to deliver to their homes.

He added: “The government are playing party politics with a vital service.”

"with its proposal to sell a 49% stake of the business" - I thought it was only 20 or 30% that had been proposed.

I've noticed that the figure has been creeping up as well, I'm sure I read 60% in one article.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
