Labour's time in power may be drawing to a close, but it's too late for our once great Royal Mail.
The second post axed, millions of letters lost, stamp prices soaring above inflation, and thousands of post offices closed.
Each time another part of this once great service was chipped away, we were assured that it was unavoidable for financial reasons.
But yesterday, a hole was blown in this specious argument.
The National Audit Office looked at the closure of the most recent 2,500 post offices to be scrapped under Labour, and found that the savings made as a result were only a fraction of those promised.
Instead of cutting costs by £293million, they only saved £45million a year.
And in exchange for this frankly paltry sum of money, the heart has been ripped out of thousands of countryside communities.
