Royal Mail Group Wide Pay Freeze

The National Officers met with the Royal Mail Group HR and Finance Directors yesterday to discuss the Board's decision to implement a group wide pay freeze.
During the meeting the Union were given presentations of the Company's performance over the last year where it was confirmed how well all of the Royal Mail Group businesses had performed.

We were then taken through the business forecasts for the coming year and all the issues that would have a bearing on the Company's overall financial / trading position. The Directors explained that it was because of these forecasts that they had no option other than to implement a group wide pay freeze.

The Directors also confirmed that they could not envisage this position changing and went on to explain that this would impact on all potential employee benefits other than colleagueshare. In response to questions over future productivity arrangements, the Directors said this would be a matter for the senior managers in each of the individual businesses within the group to determine.

The Union responded by making it clear that the Company's position was not justified and that the situation was unacceptable to the Union particularly given the scale of change that the Company was proposing and the impact this would have on our members' jobs.

Given the scope of the presentations the Union will need time to consider the information that has been provided in more depth. The Postal Executive will also need to carefully consider how this links in with all of the political and industrial challenges that we are facing before deciding how we move forward. Further developments will be reported in due course.
