TB 461/09 - Keep the Post Public: Parliamentary Timetable - House of Commons and House of Lords UPDATE

No. 461/09

Ref GS 11.0
Date: 22/05/09

(To All Branches)

The Branch Secretary

Dear Colleague

Keep the Post Public: Parliamentary Timetable - House of Commons and House of Lords UPDATE

Further to LTB 443/09 this is to remind Branches of the timetable for the House of Lords and House of Commons (as attached at pages a - d) and the need to lobby MPs to support EDM 428.

It is unclear at the moment but the Second Reading normally takes place two weeks after a First Reading.

The Postal Services Bill (HL) 2008-09 had its Third Reading on Wednesday May 20th.

The PSB(HL) 2008-2009 now enters the House of Commons. We have been informed that the First Reading would be Tuesday June 9th 2009. However, on the Parliamentary Website (http://www.parliament.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), the PSB(HL) 2008-2009 is shown as having had its First Reading Thursday May 21st, see attached (A1 - D1)
Having checked the Hansard for Thursday May 21st which gives a verbatim report of both Houses of Parliament, no mention is made of a First Reading. This may well be a technical glitch. Our supporters in Parliament are also not aware of a First Reading having taken place.

This LTB is to advise Branches that we are aware of this matter and are closely monitoring the situation.

The Union is mobilising to ensure that if MPs vote against the Second Reading, steps are being taken to ensure continued support of those MPs who signed EDM 428.

Further advice will be issued in due course.

Any enquiries on this LTB should be addressed to the Geeral Secretary's Department quoting the reference GS 11.0

Yours sincerely
W HAYES
General Secretary
