The Government's controversial plan for a partial sale of the Royal Mail has faced a fresh attack following results of a new poll.
The study showed that three out of four people opposed the idea, and some warned it could affect their voting intentions at the next election.
The survey of more than 1,000 adults across Britain also revealed that most believed part-privatisation would break a key election promise of the Labour Party.
Four out of five of those questioned for the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said a sale would be bad for the taxpayer and a similar number believed it would lead to higher prices.
More than one in four said they would be less likely to vote for their current MP if he or she backed the proposal to sell a 30% stake in the business, rising to 36% of those who identified most with the Labour party.
CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: "Royal Mail needs to be modernised not privatised.
"The public have got it right, the business needs to be reformed within the public sector giving it the freedom to invest but keeping it as a public service. It makes organisational, financial and now clearly political sense.
"The CWU will work with the Government, the management and the public to ensure that Royal Mail is modernised as a public organisation to serve the nation's interest."
The survey was published as the Postal Services Bill was due to receive its third and final reading in the House of Lords before being debated in the Commons, where a huge number of Labour MPs are threatening to vote against the measure.
Around 180 MPs have signed a Commons motion opposing privatisation of the Royal Mail, including 148 Labour members.

The union has just received some important opinion polling information and I wanted to share it with you straight away.
The independent polling firm ICM asked voters about Royal Mail. They found that three quarters of the British people do not want our post to be sold and that voters think the sale would break a key election manifesto promise.
I know that you agree with most people - Royal Mail should stay public. But we need your help getting people to support our campaign - can you invite your friends to sign our petition?

The polling is really clear. The public want the Government to step back from the brink, listen to voters and reconsider their plans. Now more than ever, politicians need to show they can listen and take the views of voters on board.
Last week the Royal Mail announced a £321 million profit - testament to the hard work and dedication of CWU members. Royal Mail is a profitable going concern - and we must do all that we can to avoid the job cuts and service cuts that TNT or a private equity owner would bring.
People who ICM polled rightly thought that services could suffer whilst prices rise under a Royal Mail controlled by a private company like TNT.
Thousands of people have already signed our petition calling for the Government to scrap their plans - we now need to find the next five thousand. Please invite your friends to join our campaign:

In the next few hours the unelected House of Lords will vote on the Government's privatisation proposal, and the Bill will then be sent to MPs in the Commons. They will need to read our poll carefully - 27% of those polled say they are less likely to vote for their current MP if they back the proposal to sell a 30% stake in the business. This figure rises to 36% for Labour supporters.
People are right to be angry with politicians who have abused the trust of voters. Deciding now to reconsider this privatisation will demonstrate that the Government is willing to listen.
Get your friends to sign our petition - together we'll make MPs to think again.
