LIVERPOOL postal workers are to stage a day of protests on Monday.
They are continuing their protests against government plans to part-privatise Royal Mail.
Members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) will be lobbying public support from 10am to 3pm in Paradise Street in Liverpool city centre.
And a 20ft-high inflatable postbox will be transported to locations around the city to highlight their ongoing campaign.
Mark Walsh, the Liverpool Communications Workers Union branch secretary, said today: “The Royal Mail is an iconic British service that has deep roots in Liverpool due to its port going back centuries.
“Postal workers are at the heart of communities the length and breadth of the country.
“The service ensures we all receive our mail six days a week.
“The service may not be profitable in rural locations, or for the majority of social mail such as cards and letters.
“But this is a public service and public services are worth more than balance sheets.”
He added: “Privatisation would threaten services, push up costs for customers, even in cities like Liverpool, and will lead to job losses and further Post Office closures.
“We have a first class postal service in the UK with cheaper costs than most in Europe.
“Privatisation will be a financial and political disaster and with the support of the Merseyside public we can overturn the decision and keep the post public.”
The jobs of up to 600 Liverpool postal workers are already under threat if proposals go through next year.
The Royal Mail is planning to move out of Liverpool city centre by switching work from the Copperas Hill sorting centre to a new site in Warrington
