LTB 257/09 - Conscience Clause
No. 257/’09
Ref: LR/DGN
Date: 19th March 2009
To: All Branches
Dear Colleague
Conscience Clause
The Race Advisory Committee has recently been discussing the issue of the BNP and their likely efforts to increase their votes before the European elections. As a consequence of these discussions the issue of the ‘conscience clause’ was raised and the need to make all postal workers, particularly those who work on delivery, aware of the ‘conscience clause’ which allows a delivery person the right to refuse to deliver election material, if the material they are delivering, is considered to be offensive due to personal circumstances or beliefs or where an individual believes that delivery of a particular item may incur personal risk. However the CWU fully recognises the legal obligation placed upon the business to deliver all mail, including election material and that we will do all we can to ensure that the legal obligations are met whilst at the same time enabling those individuals who have a genuine problem to retain their dignity and for the issue to be dealt with in a fair and sensible manner.
The European elections are due to take place in early June so we can expect campaign material to begin circulating well in advance of this period.
The CWU are very keen to ensure that our members know their rights in this respect and any queries in relation to this matter should be raised with Bob Gibson’s department. We would refer you to LTB 172/05, which was sent out previously on this issue and this covers in details the agreements struck with the business in this regard. As a reminder to our members, it should be noted that the objective of the agreement is to avoid flashpoints and to ensure that there is a continuity of all services.
Yours sincerely

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Do i need to deliver the communist propoganda?
If i was a labour man, would i need to deliver the tory stuff?
If i was pro european , could i refuse to deliver the ukip leaflet.
If hayes and co spent as much time as they possibly have comin up wi this crap, trying to get better working conditions and wages for the majority of us, then all the better.
Note to say, imagine runnin scared of the bnp, all the brains, all the money, all the unions, the churches, the minority groups, the obama election team, the list goes on.
Regardless of this, we shall get a member elected to europe, unless of course, Labour use the now infamous cardboard security boxes with no lockable seals, coupled with some crooked vote counters!
Remenber the last fiasco where a judge likened a count in the uk akin to something like a banana republic?
And folk fear the BNP!!!
Zimbabwe anyone.

I deliver in a mainly East Asian and African Caribbean area and as I have been on the walk nearly 4 years I consider a lot of them my friends and would feel uneasy delivering BNP leaflets. Also as there is a mixed rang gang on the same estate I would not feel safe doing so either. However as my estate is as I have described not sure BNP would be that bothered as they would have very little chance of getting in.eroader wrote:I refused last time around.

BTW its not a fear of the BNP as you suggest but a fear of offending my customers or becoming a target for abuse or violence because I had delivered them. If may not be right but I am afraid that as I don't accept BNP policies I don't see why I should take such risks to make others aware of them. I am very unlikely to be abused or assaulted because of the policies of the other parties UKIP, SWP and Communists included therefore I have no problem in delivering them.

What did you do over there when Sinn Fein and DUP were electioneering with the alleged connections to the IRA and RHC. I mean posties were killed during the troubles so that goes a bit further than us an the BNP.

Re: LTB 257/09 - Conscience Clause
The DUP where never attached to any paramilitary group it was UDP who where aligned to the UDA (UFF) and the PUP who where aligned to the UVF (RHC) Sinn Fein where aligned to RIRA and TBH all the various groups and political parties confused me sometimes.
Anyway, I've always delivered all election material no matter who it was for because I didn't know what the peoples personal views where and to impose your own personal beliefs on others is (I believe) wrong (I find it more reprehensible to deliver the D2Ds/letters that con vulnerable people out of their money than to give them something that may or may not offend).

They may be trying to appear respectable now, because their previous attempts
to rule the streets by violence failed.
But behind their electoral facade they are still the closet nazis they always were.
It's just that at the moment they prefer to incite gullible disaffected kids to do their
dirty work, and take the consequences.
