We are getting used to seeing new and 'life changing' innovations, which will apparently replace the traditional delivery of mail but is it all for the good?
With an increasingly ageing population and number of people who live alone the unsung, unseen social service that the traditional postman delivers along with the mail, is overlooked. They are the eyes and ears of a community and their regular visits a reassurance to many households.
Although I am sure that email and various innovative developments, BlueMailCentral, will bring about changes and ‘efficiencies’ – (for who?) much will be lost that we will not appreciate until it is too late.
There are few things that bring more joy than a handwritten letter.
And none will hear the postman's knock
Without a quickening of the heart.
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?
W.H. Auden,
