Unless I'm mistaken, Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool were involved. If that strike hadn't taken place, we would have had four hour deliveries along with team working and the rest. The management, even at the low level, were confident of doing anything they liked after we lost the pay dispute. On Thursday, we'll see who is calling the shots and it won't be those jumped up shiny arses.

Re: re: What was that strike about?
That was after the membership nationally narrowly voted to accept the national pay offer. Leighton and Crozier told the CWU that 'the World had changed' and they believed thet could do as they wanted as the membership would not back the Union. But London had voted for industrial action on London Weighting and began a series of one day stikes. Local managers at a couple of delivery offices also thought they could do as they liked and took povocative action, suspending people, which lead to walkouts. As the mail from these offices was moved to other offices, they also walked out, and other offices walked out in sympathy even if they had not recieved scab mail. The strikes spread across the country. after a week Leighton and Crozier had to negotiate (we were told that this was because the whole of Scotland was going to walk out in support the next day).POSTMAN wrote:I was off long term sick at the time but na aint got a clue, was a london thing i think.F0zziebear wrote:Can anyone remember what that strike was about?
Johnnypick might know,i've pointed him to this,as it's bugging me now.
London got an increase of £6 a week on London Weighting as a result, but the real victory was that Leighton and Crozier were stopped in their proposed attacks for the time being.
Thanks to all the offices who supported us then.

just a thought about strikes there are 150,000 of us but due to cut backs the number of people needed to break down the chain is far fewer than it has ever been,if the m/c and distribution centres walked there would be no one to seg and sort the mail,no r/m drivers cross the picket lines any way the rest of us put £30 quid each through the union to support our friends nice and legally we all get paid
they cant send all the managers because they have to have so many managers per number off staff and the rest of us are at work therefore the managers have to be with us legally
600 drivers get sent to m/c refuse to cross picket line get back to d/o get suspended we all walk out because of this
simplified view i know but there must be sneaky ways to over stretch whatever resources the boys think they have without us going down the same road as the miners

If the dispute continues, here's an idea from Dave Douglass. A Geordie and a good union man with a very long history of fighting the bosses.
To the spirit of the rebel snowman
The Miners of Silverwood, having been told they were confined to six pickets only, built themselves a seventh comrade in the shape of a large snowman, wearing for good measure a plastic policeman's helmet.
Next morning, Chief Inspector Nesbitt appears on the scene and seeing the jeering miners and their steely eyed companion, ordered the constables to knock it down . This order brought rebellion to the police ranks as PCs declined to, "look so f***ing stupid knocking down a snowman". "Very well," shouts the irate Nesbitt, jumping in his Range Rover and charging off to demolish the snowman, as pickets ran laughing for cover.
Maybe it was a trick of the light, or maybe a twinkle glistened in the icy countenance on the snowman's fixed expression - we shall never know, as the Range Rover made contact and came to a dead stop, smashing front grill, bumper and headlamps and hurling the shocked Nesbitt into the steering wheel. PCs found excuses to walk away or supress body shaking laughter while pickets fell about on the ground with side splitting mirth. The snowman had been constructed around a three foot high two foot thick concrete post!
Dave Douglass - All power to the imagination!

MANAGERS DOING WALKS DONT MAKE ME LAUGH. THATS WHY THEY BECAME MANAGERS IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT HANDLE IT. NOW IF IT WAS DRINKING COFFEE THEN WE MIGHT HAVE TO WORRY. JUST A THOUGHT ON HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED WHEN I FIRST STARTED YOU HAD TO DO 10 YEARS AS A POSTMAN BEFORE YOU COULD EVEN BE CONSIDERED FOR THE POSITION AND THEN ONLY ON A TRIAL BASIS.

both our managers only know where the office and pub is they wouldn't have a clue about anywhere else in town as neither of them live in the area and watching them trying to prep mail when there is long term sick is a joke in it's self, i'm just waiting for the news next friday when there is a picture of leighton in a royal mail jacket on a bike with a half full bag of mail, with the headline "leighton loads up for the long haul"...........lol then quickly once the photo shoot is over it's back to his penthouse

Managers doing walks. . . . don't make me laugh
one of our screws only got the position coz it took him 7 hours to do a 2.5 hour walk when he started as a postie
another one has the physique of a sumo wrestler and breaks out in a sweat if he has to walk the length of the office
when they go past us to go out on delivery (assuming they ever manage to actually prep a round) is there anything to stop us following them around the delivery just so we can point out every time they do something wrong ?
