wasnt aimed at you , i dont think NT needs you to hold his hand for him.
Scargill was a tanky / trot a very dangerous breed , this is the problem of real politik with Unions . There would have been militancy & bad feeling going back to the hated private coal owners prior to Nationalization .

The danger is that the activists / rank & file can get understandably disenchanted with the " corrupt right " , however with the more "militant" alternative , it CAN be a case of the Pied Piper calling the tune , and the Pied Piper is really looking after number one AND there's things that the " corrupt right " for all their obvious shortcomings would never do due to expediency .

Unfortunately Baroness Barmy was trying to have her own Right Wing revolution at the time and it NEARLY came off , so there simply wouldn't be room in the country for Arthur trying to have a Marxist one .
What New Labour tried
to do initially with the " third way " is get rid of all this polarization & pendulum politics and try and neutralize the Tory Party .
I'll probably get flamed but that's real politics unless people want to get their AK 47's out :Very Happy from underneath the bed

somebody fixed someone up with " Rachel " (who was waiting for the next operation) for being a a**** . He got a hell of a shock in the car park as I don't think that many people have found one of those in a thong , bar Victoria Beckham ( allegedly ! ) , he soon sobered up and ran a mile !

It also happened in Majorca , this guy's beer goggles weren't working very

A quick word because the 'usual suspects' are in this thread.
Lets stop the childish title tattle on the board.Silly little name calling. The chasing of each other. The messing around with usernames.
f**k me the list is endless, others on here do not want to see your spats.

Threads are being spoilt and are regularly going of topic.

RULES:

If someone has a different position to you please respect their right to have differing views, and enjoy yourself when picking holes in their position in a constructive way. We would much rather have a long winded well thought out argument, picking out weak points in someone's position, than have a thread full of 1 line insults.

Just because someone has a different viewpoint or political position to you, it does not mean that they are a 'Manager' or a 'Union fanatic', any posts making such assumptions or generalisations will be pulled or amended and the poster warned.

Try to research information before commenting on a persons position. This can be a grey area and we cannot stifle a persons view on certain things just because we do not agree with it. However, those who hold these views should try to present them in the most constructive way possible.

There is also a 'report post' function on the site, please use this if any of the rules have been broken.

Night Tonic wrote:Indeed. Not everyone believes in standing there with a bobble hat on and 'being counted'. Maybe its a north/south divide thing, who knows, but it does put water on the glowing embers of the so-called unity theory. Fact is we all have different viewpoints but unity, if there ever was any, hasn't stopped privatisation which will go through. Not that I ever thought a few red banners and maintaining billy's circumference would add up to much.

Whether I'm regarded as 'irritating' or not,all my predictions have been far closer to what has actually happened in the real world than any branch meeting in the back room of the Red Lion. I tell it how I see it, and if thats irritating then so be it, but I'd rather have my eyes open than the wool pulled over my eyes. Look how many posts there are on objecting MPs but someone hasn't been doing the maths on this. The privatisation bill will go through easily and Mandelson will get his way. Thats irritating too, but its the truth. Whats more irritating is the constant bugle calls and false optimism that to be honest has gone on way too long already. My last prediction is that if TNT do take on the minority share, it won't just be terms and conditions that get rewritten. The Dutch have a track record of rooting out any kind of whistle blowing or what they see as subversive and there won't be a soap box left to stand on, much less anyone to stand on one. The SWPs will find a new cause somewhere else, the union will continue shrinking, more part tiime work will become the norm, and all this will be forgotten about after a few years.

If you like to cosy yourself in absurd notions of working class grandeur and pictures of Scargill pasted everywhere, thats fine, but it'll come as an almighty shock when people realise that the CWU can't stop this at all and are just on a damage limitation excercise with a few token speeches thrown in to show they're having a go. Thats the real truth. We're in a hell of a recession and any voice we had has already been muffled by bigger problems elsewhere.

some people bothered their arses Mr NT and the Government have done a U-Turn~~~~~~~~~~~~~~You did it. Within the past couple of hours Lord Mandelson has told the House of Lords that there is "no prospect" of selling Royal Mail.

Britain has kept the post public.

By joining our campaign over the past few months, you have shown that this plan never had public support. Only a couple of months ago it was looking almost inevitable, but you made the Government listen.

Thank you for all you've done.

There are many people that deserve some of the credit for the campaign. Many, many MPs backed our campaign. Backbench Labour MPs were especially important - they held firm despite the pressure.

We have set up this page where you can leave your message of thanks - which we will collate and send to each of the MPs that have supported us:

http://post.cwu.org/thankyou" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Today is a good day because we are now able to take stock. Now that the uncertainty of privatisation has been lifted there is a great opportunity to step up a gear in modernising Royal Mail in the public sector.

We will be at the forefront of the fight for a publicly owned modern Royal Mail. I hope you will be too.

Thanks again,

Don't see how Billy can say that.

Mandelson has not said plans to part-privatise Royal Mail have been ABANDONED. Indeed, if you look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8123530.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; he is quoted thus:

Lord Mandelson has said the company cannot survive without it and he told BBC One's Breakfast that its finances were "reaching crisis point". In a separate interview with the Financial Times Lord Mandelson said he still hoped to get the necessary legislation on the statute book before the next election. But, he said, it may be difficult to do so before the House of Commons breaks for the summer, as was originally scheduled.

This whole 'victory' declaration has to me the same feel as when George Bush declared 'victory' in Iraq. Years later, the troops are still fighting. To me, the uncertainty about part-privatisation has just got worse, not better, as we won't get this issue resolved one way or the other now until after the next election. And unless there's a total sea-change in Brown's popularity, after the Tories win, they will probably go for full privatisation, making defeat of Mandelson's plans a very hollow victory indeed

agreed, but maybe Labour are taking a lurch back towards the left. the building of more council houses , abandoning the ID scheme and looking at the Trident upgrade are some of the things recently announced by the Labour Party. they realise to carry on the same way , their supporters will not turn out for the next election and maybe they will have to accept responsibility for the RM pension deficit as time is running out before the next election. they bailed out the banks to the tune of 1.3 trillion , would they seriously let RM go to the wall, what effect would that have on UK PLC ?

By an odd coincidence, in a WTLL session on Tuesday this week, one of our managers actually made the exact same prediction. One of the few occasions in my life where I was in agreement with something a manager told me :cool although her optimism about the moral goodness of our politicians struck me as frightenlingly naive.

Morally, the government SHOULD take responsibility for the deficit. It was, after all, the actions of past governments in taking contribution holidays that caused the pension fund to get in such a mess. But after the recent expenses revelations, waiting on their sense of morality to kick-in and stir their consciences could prove a long long wait ....
