Keep The Post Public - Media

The Union has had extensive media coverage over the weekend and today. You would have seen the front page article in The Daily Mirror on Friday and they have followed that story with 3 more significant articles up to today. You may have also seen coverage over the weekend of the General Secretary’s comments regarding the intent of Conference Motion E6. These were covered in several newspapers with those articles discussing the threat of CWU withdrawing from the Labour Party, if privatisation is carried out.

In addition, you may have seen the wide coverage of our public opinion poll. This poll demonstrated that 75% of the public were opposed to any sell off, rising to 89% if foreign investment was part of the arrangement. This was covered in every newspaper, either in print or online. I am grateful for the support of regions and branches in spreading that coverage to local newspapers. That poll is being circulated to MP’s.

However, the most important development is that today, the Daily Mirror has publicly stated its opposition to privatisation. This is the first national newspaper to publicly state a policy of opposition to privatisation since the publication of the Hooper report. Please bring this development to our members as widely as possible. You will find this statement in the papers editorial, headed “Voice of the Mirror”.

I am in ongoing discussion with the Daily Mirror about maximising any assistance we can get with the campaign itself.
