Re: Early Day Motion EDM 428 ROYAL MAIL- 129 SIGNATURES
I probably got the hardest MP of them all!! But hey ho here goes!
Dear David Cameron,
Having only received one vote from the conservative party so far over EDM 428 I thought I'd appeal to you directly on this extremely contentious issue.Sifting through all the rhetoric the facts are clear and simple. Imagine if you will...
'The leader of the conservative party signs the EDM 428 and this leads to a massive change in policy this country has been waiting years for. With Labour government policy in tatters the public demand an early general election with the promise of the peoples leader set to storm to No 10'
A wry smile perhaps?
Lets look at some other facts.
In a recent independent poll the vast majority of British people wanted a wholly public Royal Mail with NO foreign investment.
Level the downstream access playing field with sensible regulated measures, secure the pensions fiasco and our profitability increases to over half a billion next financial year. Untenable? Nothing like it.
Privatise the profits and nationalise the debt? We must invest this money in our service and our people. It must not be syphoned off to foreign investment.
In a service, and I want to emphasise the word service, this much loved national institution is under severe threat due to the bonus culture that is endemic throughout the business. Front line staff despair at the worsening service levels.
Ask yourself this, 'has the British public now had enough of privatisation with re-nationalisation becoming more popular and prominent?' What do you think the outcome would be if a conservative leader supported a popular view. Stood up and opposed the present governments policy and supported EDM 428.
I can absolutely guarantee this action would instigate the overwhelming respect of the British people and it would begin the downfall of this pitiful government. I can only hope you share my vision of a wholly owned British Postal service that is still the envy of the world.
Yours sincerely,
(Carterton Postman)
I'll let you know if I get a reply. Don't hold your breath!! LOL

There is only one thing you omitted and that is why should the British people be subjugated by the European nation's too exploitation by opening our postal-market before they have even begun to legislating for the opening of their markets!. And as such we are handing our European competitors a leap above us and in so doing setting a dangerous precedent for the future of our nation!. It is to this end that we all should now consider our positions on this most important issue for it is our future and not one to be decided by other's in Europe.Rennie wrote:I probably got the hardest MP of them all!! It seems some Labour MP'S that may have been undecided or sitting on the fence have been convinced of the arguments in the EDM after all the stuff in the mirror and yesterdays deabate in parliment, not to mention all the lobbying being done by CWU mbrs/reps/officers.

Just to let you know, I emailed Graham Brady, Tory MP for my constituency and he replied the other day. Basically saying he didn't agree that a partial privatisation would be wrong for RM etc etc.
Won't be getting my vote at the next elections I can tell you.

I doubt if my MP will still be one by the next election, he's already had a vote of no confidence by the environment commitee and his actions are being discussed at the EU

Reply from Davis cameron isn't all bad news...
'the conservative party will certainly not be offering the government unconditional support for its proposals'
Does that mean then if this goes ahead they government will be defeated?

Thank you fir your recent correspondence concerning the future of the Royal Mail.
As you may know, the Conservative Party welcomed the publication of the Hooper review and we agree with its central theme that change within Royal Mail is vital. We also think that a change to the ownership structure of Royal Mail which would include part privatisation may have merits depending on the wider circumstances of the proposals.
I was very pleased to see that the CWU endorses the call for a new relationship with management and is prepared to negotiate an agreement that would support modernisation of the industry. We also recognise that whether or not a change in ownership structure takes place, vital issues such as equipment modernisation, falling post usage, maintenance of the universal service obligation, safeguarding of the postal network and the pensions deficit, will all need to be dealt with.
We are very concerned at the lack of progress on these issues during the current Government’s period in office and we share your concerns that the issue of privatisation should not be used as a format for overlooking the key underlying issues which Royal Mail needs to face up to in any event. To that extent, whilst we have no objection to privatisation conceptually, the Conservative Party will certainly not be offering the Government unconditional support for its proposals.
With regard to this specific EDM, let me explain why I will not be able to sign it. EDMs are a very useful way for a backbench MP to raise the pro file of a particular issue. However, there is a convention that the leaders of parliamentary parties should not sign them, unless they have been tabled on behalf of the party as a whole. So I am afraid I will not be able to sign this EDM.
I can confirm that my colleagues and I will be reviewing the overall package most carefully to ensure that we retain a strong and sustainable postal service.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to write to me
David Cameron

Re: Early Day Motion EDM 428 ROYAL MAIL- 139 SIGNATURES
Has it just escaped my notice or is Alan Johnson still to sign this EDM. I would have thought that for someone who fought against privatisation, cause lets face it that is what this is,when we had a Tory Government would still be fighting tooth and nail despite the fact that he now has a cushy number and is extremely pally with some of those who are pushing this through.
Oh for the days when politicians took up their seats through principles and to fight the good fight for whatever cause the people they were paid to reprsent wanted them to.
I am always wary of leaders on the CWU. I can remember back as far as Alan Tuffin, remember him, through to the present day and although Mr. Hayes is making a lot of noise about withdrawing Labour Party support my cynical mind keps telling me otherwise....Move over Al is there room for one little one on the Labour benches...watch this space..colleagues.
Now where did I leave that paddle......

Allan Johnson can't sign it - apparently there is an understanding that ministers and shadow ministers will not sign EDMs even if they agree with them..
