Hello, all!
I have just retired (at the tender age of 30) from a long time doing retail and the licenced trade. Well, not really retired, as that implies I don't have to work. I do. Hence, I have just successfully applied to be a postie! Something I've always wanted to do. Something about the hat and the bike, I think. But I digress.
So I have just got myself a 1-hour contract (boo, hiss, i know...) in sunny Poole. I start on the 10th of february, and am so excited I am shaking!
Now, from any of you other part-timers, how many hours can I expect to pick up? Any ideas? The guy doing my interview said basically I could get as many as I wanted by working at neighboring branches, but is this generally true?
Anyone have any great tips for a newbie? Anything you wish you'd known when you started? What shoes should I buy?
Anyhow, I'm so proud to be joining such a venerable institution (this forum, if not the RM...). But not as proud as my dad, who is mostly just proud I will be unionized...

Dont get me wrong mate but youre gonna be a dogs body 
Royal Mail want to get rid of using casual and agency staff and have come up with these 1 hour contract jobs to replace them and get the job done where they can on a part time basis.We have a couple at our office and the good news is they can work 6 days a week where possible,it all depends how many people are off sick on a daily basis and if any full timers are doing overtime,if theres nothing for them to do at our place they may get sent to a near by office or they may go back home and wait for a phone call from the manager later on in the day asking them to come in the next day.
You should get a days induction at a Mail Centre where they will go through the basics,then when you turn up at the delivery office the local coach should take you out on a walk and show you all the ins and outs,after that my friend your on your own.
Some tips for you
Do not start before your time,Do not go out on your walk with overweight bags or trolley,Do take a meal break before you go out and dont rush and tear about as you will make mistakes,everything else should be explained to you.Make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes as well as you are gonna be walking about for a good few hours.Ask to speak to the local CWU union rep as well if you are interested in joining our union.Good luck and enjoy the job.
