That this House notes that the Labour Party Conference 2008, with the backing of Ministers, supported a vision of a wholly publicly-owned, integrated Royal Mail Group; welcomes the conclusion of the Hooper Report that the current universal service obligation offered by Royal Mail, including six days a week delivery, must be protected and that the primary duty of a new regulator should be to maintain it; further welcomes the recommendations in the Report that the Government should take responsibility for the pensions deficit which followed an extended contributions holiday; endorses the call for a new relationship between management and postal unions and welcomes the commitment of the Communication Workers Union to negotiate an agreement which would support the modernisation of the industry; observes that in 2007 the Government agreed to a £1.2 billion loan facility on commercial terms to modernise Royal Mail operations; rejects the recommendation of the Hooper Report to sell a minority stake in Royal Mail which would risk fracturing one of Britain's greatest public services; further notes that the Government is currently advertising for a new Chair of Royal Mail; and urges the Secretary of State to appoint a Chair and management team who are committed to the principles of a modern public enterprise.

Geraldine Smith MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale has today tabled an Early Day Motion against moves to privatise Royal Mail.

It's called 'EDM 428: Royal Mail' and supports modernisation of Royal Mail and rejects any move to sell a minority stake in the business.

The EDM has over 70 signatures already but needs more. Please lobby your MP to get them to sign this EDM. Don't accept any excuses - this is too big an issue to ignore!

Just before Christmas I e mailed the Labour Group on Fife Council,got 2 replies ,so thumbs up to Cllr Willie Sullivan and Cllr Judy Hamilton and shame on the rest of the group,it does'nt say much for a person as a cllr,if they cant be bothered to reply to e-mails,I also e-mailed the 3 Labour Msps for this area,out of the 3 only 1 had the bottle to reply,so kudos to John Park and to the 2 uber blairites that are Clare Baker and Richard Baker,enjoy your time as backbench MSP's cos you wont be back in govt,anyway heres John Parks letters to me,nice to see a rep of the 'peoples party' actually working.

Thanks for getting in touch and sorry for the delay in getting back to
you. My staff have been on a well earned break over the Christmas and
New year period and therefore my office hasn't been fully functional.

Prior to Christmas I made contact with the CWU and have arranged to meet

I met with Scottish officials from the CWU yesterday who provided me
with an update on the current position. I'm sure you will have received
a correspondence from the union highlighting their activity thus far.

I have committed to work with the union on this matter and have
discussed how best I can support their efforts to inform MSPs of their
view on these proposals and any future re-organisation of the Royal
Mail.

I'm sure you appreciate this is an issue reserved to Westminster and
this limits the influence MSPs can have - I do however have the
opportunity raise the concerns of the union and the workforce with
Ministers in the Scotland Office and will do so over the next day or so.

Due to a lack of clarity of what the final proposals will be - it is
difficult to expand further other than to say I will be keeping in close
contact with the union over the coming weeks and ready to assist them in
representing the concerns of the workforce.

I will keep you up to date with any substantial developments from my end
as and when required.
