Walk sequencing machines.

Post by POSTMAN »

Apparently,so the trials say, they cut about 30mins off your prepping time.
I'm presuming that's if they sort ALL the letters into bundles, obviously not Flats or packets.
Looking at your walks now,if it was all in sequence, which i presume it will be,would you be happy with that allowance?
I'm thinking although i don't want the bloody things,i'd be happy with 30mins.
The idea is obviously to speed us up,so with this,Management think they've got 30mins to play with.
Thoughts?

Walk sequencing machines

Post by johnnyp »

The latest ive heard is that they are not as good as what royal mail was hoping.they do not sort no where near the amount of items they were after :dance (what a shame lol) and they are now looking at converting existing machines. If you take a look at walk sorted bundles and the amount of missorts they contain then that 30 minutes saved will be used checking for mistakes so you wont be any better of.These machines are NOT for our benefit but for royal mails ,long term they will result in job losses etc.LESS PREP=LONGER WALKS=LESS STAFF.

re: The constant drive towards automation

Post by F0zziebear »

RM have been moving towards more automation for years, this was obviously the next step. Seriously having posties sorting for upto 1 hour in the morning is ripe for automation.

The specialist skills you have are prepping that walk into the most efficient approach (knowing the best order in which to do the round) and actually doing the round. That is your unique service proposition to the company.

There are obviously other skills such as how to deliver the various products and being able to sort missorts etc... (apologies if I've missed something else and feel free to correct me).

So it is this that they won't be able to automate, though motorised delivery trollies will probably come in and in theory I suppose you can push a larger weight, and they may find a way of doing another national delivery round rationalisation. Having said that the last one did not impress Adam Crozier very much and he won't be rushing into it without being absolutely convinced that it will happen without a national strike. That would only play into TNT/UK Mail/DHL Globalmail's hands

Your thoughts? :Applause

Well,it goes back to the 3-30hr delivery span.
They will want it made longer, but will we accept it?
I think we will,we'll have no choice, but how long? 4,4-30,5hrs

RM want these machines in, for one they will do away with early shift allowance because they can have you starting at 6am saving them roughly£12 a man. they also want a part time workforce eventualy, where possibly mothers can drop their kids off at school and then come in pick a bag of mail up thats already been preped and deliver it for 3 or 4 hours and go home. They dont want a full time workforce, they dont like the contracts were on, with part time they can have flexable contracts to employ or get rid of when they want, they also dont have to worry about the pension too much either,if the workforce is mostly part time, but it will seriously s**t our pensions up, because there wont be the same amount of contribusions being paid in,so what do you think will happen to our pensions?.RM are having a go at us up and down the country over different things, trying to force us into confrontation, they are up to something. RM are panicking because all these other firms are buying the latest machines and technology, and they think we had better keep up, but really we have something other companies dont have, and thats us with a wealth of knowledge of areas people places, that every other company is envious of, all of which will be lost in 10 or 20 years, i dont expect rm to realise that though.

On paper these machines are the best thing since sliced bread.Reality is different.Royal Mail seem happy to spend billions on machines,It has been 10 years since we were told of the new machines that could code and sort flats.RM have obviosly fallen foul of a scam.
