Royal Mail says pay deal is final

Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton has reiterated that the organisation cannot afford to improve its 2.5% pay offer, despite staff voting for strike action.
With the Communication Workers Union (CWU) due to set dates for a series of national walkouts, Mr Leighton insisted he had no room to manoeuvre on money.

"The money on the table is the money on the table because that is what the business can afford," he told the BBC.

The CWU said the strikes will go ahead unless a breakthrough is reached.

Both sides have said they are keen for fresh talks.

'What is affordable'

"People think it's a matter of negotiation, but 2.5% is what is affordable at the moment," said Mr Leighton.

"Businesses like ours that are competing in a commercial environment can't afford to pay money out that we don't have."

It's not all about the money though and he knows it. :lfo

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

What about the £800 worth of shares that aren't shares - stick the certificates on a spike in the executive bog and give us the money they represent - you'll get your money's worth out of us Al 'cos we believe in our business and don't want to see you send it down the pan where the aforementioned share certificates should be.

This is a pay deal about STRINGS - we know it, they deny it and if we are not careful the public will be decieved by the RM propaganda machine.

The CWU have already said they want the 2.5% plus the £800 phantom shares re-negotiated into an acceptable package . . . . . no need for fresh money to be added just rework the existing offer into basic pay . . . . thing is WE all know this is not about the money . . . . we just gotta take every chance to let the public know the truth, get your rep to write to your local rag, call up your local radio and we must all talk to as many people as we can.

We must beat the propoganda machine that is Royal Mail

Those phantom/ghost shares are hilarious. How can they offer something which is already publicly owned, unless... they're ready to privatise it?

I woudn't read too much into the share issue,it is simply profit related pay.
There used to be tax breaks for companys to offload huge profits, tax free, before the government closed the loophole in 2000.
Essentially that's been replaced by schemes such as this, and while in essence it's an incentive for everyone to profit, unfortunately it
appears we would have to make many sacrifices to benefit.

These colleagueshares are a red herring anyway. If we accept them we cant benefit for at least 5 years and with Crozier/Leighton and their cutbacks how many of us will be left. At best Adam and Al are being disingenuous and at worst its fiddling the books so they don't have to give us a decent pay rise for 5 years.

What's the betting that for 4 years we'll be doing so good that it will be exactly as they say and the dividends will be excellent. Then surprise surprise in the final year they value shoots down and they don't have to pay quite as much as we were expecting.

No, it's not just no rise for the next 5 years, one of those famous strings is the removal of the right for the union to negotiate a pay rise ever again, it will all be based on profit and performance. Seeing as how the boys at the top can easily manipulate the figures to show pretty much whatever they want that means we get what we're given and no arguments. Ever.

Bleedin hell even the Armed Forces have an independant body that reviews pay and allowances so that they get a decent wage.
