You have to apply to have the change, changed back. This section of the People Policy weeds out those who actually don’t have a genuine reason for the change - they would just like to finish earlier by being dropped off at their house.

When they are told their contract will be changed they no longer want the change.

But for genuine applicants, it means they won’t be repeatedly pestered and can say it’s in their contract to have the FF arrangement.

That is the counterargument from the business, yes, and they say they will review such arrangements annually. There is some ambiguity between “flexible working”, which normally constitutes a permanent contractual change, and the more informal “family friendly” scheme the business has historically operated. The latter was intended for less formal adjustments, with the expectation that the employee would revert to their previous working arrangements once the adjustment was no longer needed.

However, both the legislation and the company’s own policies make clear that flexible working — which is now the only route for obtaining a “family friendly” adjustment — will normally constitute a permanent change to the contract of employment unless otherwise agreed between the employee and employer.

We have had lots of “reviews” in our office too in recent weeks. Managers are asserting themselves and unilaterally trying to impose changes; posties are, after a fight, having their flexible working “deals”, as they have been termed, honoured only then to find their duties being changed or taken off them as punishment. Awful atmosphere for everyone at the minute.

A lot of these issues arise because a proper formal arrangement was never put in place, rather it was an informally agreed arrangement with a certain manager and then that manager leaves and a new delivery model is coming in…

People need to get these things done formally.

Family Friendly, duty adjustments etc all need to be done by the book these days. Don't rely on an 'agreement' as they can be easily be misinterpreted. I know someone who thought their informal agreement on something would stand up to a revision, safe to say they don't work for RM anymore.
