A YORK delivery depot has been evacuated after reports of a fire this morning.

It is understood staff were evacuated from the Post Office Depot in Birch Park Industrial Estate, off Huntington Road, at around 10am this morning (August 11).

A member of the public, who did not want to be named, said that he was visiting to collect a parcel and witnessed the incident.

He said: “I just came to pick up a parcel and when I arrived, everyone had been outside for about 40 minutes and there were two fire engines at the scene.

“We were told that a battery pack had burst into flames in someone’s locker.”

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "Two fire engines attended reports of a fire believed to be a battery pack on fire in a cupboard.

"The crews located and extinguished the fire. The building had been evacuated prior to fire crews’ arrival."

The Post Office has been contacted for comment.
