In our DO, everyone gets training (shown around) for a new walk without exception. That's the official policy. It's simply not good enough to make someone do the added 1/3 of a neighbouring duty without knowing the route because it would take far too long to figure it out by themselves when already pressured by time constraints on the duty that they do know. Often the bits added on won't be directly neighbouring areas anyway and will require a bit of driving to get there.
In an office where everyone gets shown around a duty, it is absolutely right that anyone now having to do the added bits as part of DM26 gets shown around the walk. Why shouldn't they?

[*]With DPR on the PDA now if you are just doing tracked and letters for that house the DPR routing takes you right to thr door 90% of the time. No training required.

Re: DM26 - No Training
Not sure if this is still the case but if you use the DPR you can't download the boxes and collections too so you need 2 PDA's with different log ins. Very occasionally I've managed to log out of one and into the other without an issue but often if you try to log out of the core route before you've done the boxes and collections it won't let you because you still have outstanding jobs. Bizarrely this doesn't happen every time.
There might have been an update since I last tried to combine DPR with Core.

On a regular/normal delivery if you scan the 2d barcode in scan to core, upload all scanned items then download your route you can click on show delivery points which will bring up a list of all scanned items. You can then click on an item you don't know and click on the navigate (top right of the item details) which will open the map app and click start. It will give sat nav like directions to where you need to go click finish when you get there to return to your list and scan at the doorstep as normal.

Re: DM26 - No Training
I went on a revised duty last week that has been cobbled together to accommodate a new build estate. I had no idea of the layout of the new estate when I drove up to it - an hour later I knew it, even with a few street signs still not put up.
It's delivery work not rocket science.

You must be fully staffed and then some to enable that.
The only time I ever recall that happening was pre-P&L when you were on foot yourself. I insisted on getting shown round the short-straw duty I signed for. How that played out was the previous duty holder and me did half the duty each on the Monday and then switched sides on the Tuesday. It's like memories from another life on another planet.
The machine stops.
