I'm on new 30 hour contract, 2 years into the job. Originally Sunday shifts were listed as 9am start 5.40pm finish (8 hours paid, allowing for 40 minute unpaid break to be taken) recently they have now changed to 10am-6pm (seemingly not including the break time)
When I am working a Sunday, I have to come in 30 mins later during the week leading up to it so 5.5 hours paid (6 hour shift time with 30 mins break)
So last Sunday I started at 10am, took a break around 2pm and as they had decided to give me 145 parcels over about 135 drops, I knew I wasn't going to get them all done, PDA was saying it was an 8 hour and 8 minute route, I'm only paid for 8 hours and that's without having to find a van, sort and number the parcels, do vehicle check, load the van etc. Manager did say "just do your best as we are going to fail today regardless" so I ended up taking back around 40 un-attempted parcels, I got back to the depot around 6.15pm to find 2 managers standing outside with the depot locked up, I said these new times don't allow for a break as I used to get back at 5.40pm previously, so assumed I'd be able to scan out at 6.40pm having needed the remaining time to unload the 40 parcels and scan them back in etc. Manager said "If you want a break then you have to make it up out of your own time"
I believe the change of times is because the work won't be there and ready til around 10am now as I'd thought about going in at 9.20am next time I'm on a Sunday so I can take the break and be scanned out at 6pm.
Just wondering how other offices deal with breaks for staff on the 30 hour contracts, are they built into the SISO times at your office, are you just given an actual 6 hour working window, so therefore you don't need to actually be scanned in for 6.5 hours everyday or 8 hours & 40 minutes on a Sunday?
Thanks

Re: SUNDAYS & Breaks on new contract.
It's catch 22 though for the OP as if he insists on taking a 40 min unpaid break then they'll make him start at 9:20 rather than the 10 they've suggested, assuming 6 is always going to be the latest time he can work?Hitcher wrote: ↑30 Jun 2026, 21:01Complete bollocks - it must be built into your attendance time.

Even though it's unpaid can they make he/she take their break in one go and at the start of the shift?

Re: SUNDAYS & Breaks on new contract.
No, it should be in the middle but no later than 6 hours.
https://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/workingtime.htmRest breaks at work
A worker is entitled to an uninterrupted break of 20 minutes when daily working time is more than six hours. It should be a break in working time and should not be taken either at the start, or at the end, of a working day.

If your doing 5.50 you dont get a break so you should only be doing 5hr50mins without a break

The break has to be continuous, away from the work. The break should be planned during the working time, not at the beginning or end. The wtr does all for compensatory arrangements.

Pre 22 differs to.post 22. Post 22 contracts are entitled to a 20 minute unpaid break during the working time if the working time is more than 6 hours. The break cannot be at the beginning or end of the working time and must be away from the work.funkflex55 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2026, 07:28Legally it's 15mins after 6 hours I believe.
Company policy, a shift between 5 hours and 6 hours 59 min, Has a break of 30 minutes. Obviously unpaid on new contract.

Thanks. I wasn't aware that the break lengths were also different.tramssirhc wrote: ↑02 Jul 2026, 07:58Pre 22 differs to.post 22. Where do you take an unpaid break? Surely you can't be responsible for any company equipment eg a vehicle or any mail your off pay its your time.
