How things appear to have changed for the worse since the extreme heatwave in July '22, our depot started the red warning shifts earlier and we did what we could until we felt unsafe/unwell. It was in excess of 35C at just gone 1130 and a vast majority of the OPGs returned to the depot for around 1200 before heading home.
We done the same except couldn't scan out until finishing times

Go on the sick for a week when the temp goes above 30 and you are on a walking duty. Your health is more important than royal mails profits.

34c here today in London, and similar if not higher temps the next few days. Instructions from manager…zilch, zippo, nothing, - business as usual. Absolute joke. They care more about getting their tracked parcels done than your health.

Whatever the fossil fuel apologists and lobbyists think, these temperatures are going to be the new normal in the summer months, and we need some legally enforced upper limit for working outside, rather than a vague grey area. The sun was so fierce today that it was actually hurting.
July 11 2025, the temperature in my 15 year old Partner, (without AC) van was 44 degrees. Today July 9 2026 it was 42 degrees. These are not "once in a lifetime" freak temperatures. This is the new normal. I fully expect to break last year`s "record" tomorrow.

The frustrating thing is that many offices are exposing their workers to dangerous heat for the sake of not failing a single van. Most of our work arrives early enough that we could get out an hour and a half earlier and avoid the hottest, mid-afternoon temperatures.

Instead, with DM26, our new finish times will ensure that in future years we’ll be out all throughout that part of the day. And given that the “super El Niño” is forecast to increase in strength and last into 2027, next year will be the worst Summer ever to be a postie.
