"" They range from gormless at best and bone idle at worst.""
That describes some posties who've been there years and certainly quite a few managers.
New starters feed off what they experience.

Re: Standard of new starters
Unfortunately Royal Mail are that desperate they just cannot employ good hard workers like they did 20 years ago.The vetting system has gone. Literally anyone can get a job with them now since 2022 which was never the case as it wasn't an easy job to get into to. A lot of times they are bypassing the online application and just having open days which they did at our office not long ago where they hired anyone that literally turned up.Walter sobchak wrote: ↑09 Apr 2026, 21:36Is shockingly bad.
They range from gormless at best and bone idle at worst.
Guy I was training today wore huge DJ style headphones out of delivery and wasn’t the least bit interested in learning the job.

Exactly. A manager told me a couple of years ago, that they are employing people now who wouldn’t have even got an interview in the past.

Re: Standard of new starters
These days I usually cannot be bothered to point out the factually incorrect statements I see the grey trousered, blue-shirted old timers make about new entrants. But as someone else pointed out, there are plenty of gormless, bone idle, degenerates who've been with the company many years or even decades, laziness and stupidity isn't unique to new starts. There are good and bad right across the entire workforce regardless of length of service. Some of the people I've met at RM simply couldn't be employed anywhere else because their behaviour is so antisocial and bizarre.
Oh and new starts definitely do need a driving licence to get a job!! The only non driver roles are strictly for people who joined donkeys years ago.

Re: Standard of new starters
While this is somewhat true most of those degens in the past got their duties completed or they really wouldnt have lasted. RM used to be seen as a somewhat decent job, now they offer the least amount of pay possible and want 100% hard work from signing in to signing off everyday, this really appeals to no one and theyre probably just getting the people signing on job seekers allowance being forced to accept this job "opportunity" but have no desire to work hard as they can do badly get fired and go back on JSA.Jonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑11 Apr 2026, 22:46But as someone else pointed out, there are plenty of gormless, bone idle, degenerates who've been with the company many years or even decades, laziness and stupidity isn't unique to new starts. If RM want the luxury of having people work hard they need to offer a much higher wage that people wouldnt want to get fired and lose out on, RM knows at this point they have to keep the people with barely a pulse or they will have literally no one to deliver anything.

But yes, there are still non-drivers being taken on, usually because they have some familial or close link to a manager who is keen to give them a leg up. We have two non drivers at the moment, though both are supposed to be actively trying to pass their test, plus one person with an automatic-only driving licence.

As I said above I know one who hasn't got a licence. Will become common as they need peopleclaretandblue wrote: ↑12 Apr 2026, 07:36Not true, our Dom has taken on a family friend who doesn't drive.Jonathan Alsatian wrote: ↑11 Apr 2026, 22:46These days I usually cannot be bothered to point out the factually incorrect statements I see the grey trousered, blue-shirted old timers make about new entrants. Re: Standard of new starters
To be fair, the vast majority of our new entrants work to a pretty decent standard and are given a fair amount of overtime to complete duties, much to the chagrin of a hardcore of long serving staff who see overtime as 'helping the company out'. The same staff who see things like job and finish still as an entitlement, throw a tantrum if asked to deviate in any way from their very achievable workload, and walk about all day saying how much they hate the place and want to leave.....

Not wanting to tar everyone with the same brush but unfortunately that is not the experience where I work.
No shows on a regular occurrence without contacting the office and when they do turn up they are reluctant to do a HCT duty (l thought I'd have my own van!)
Manager can't let them go until a replacement is found which isn't that easy when the applicants aren't exactly knocking the door down to work for RM

Re: Standard of new starters
It would help clear frames if they hired competent people without filtering for possession of a driving licence, which would also please a lot of new starts who join thinking letters are exactly what they'd be delivering. But no, someone's got to drive because there's a kitchen sink in the red skin and a customer collect for a car bumper.Roadie8282 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2026, 11:01As I said above I know one who hasn't got a licence.
