Cycle to work??
Anyone got any idea of the cycle to work benefit is coming back? It just says the window is closed but it has been for ages now so is it on ice or never likely to return……

Re: Cycle to work??
I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.
Could this change in April, possibly not if the minimum wage rises again ?

Re: Cycle to work??
The company can gamble to make sure all workers lose out on many benefits like POAL and the cycle scheme. They don't care if you have to walk to work.BenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

The business are aware of the ramifications of falling below the minimum wage threshold and most of us have to suffer because of miscalculation. What a great company

Yes they used that excuse before the last payrise - but legacy are nowhere near minimum wage so it doesnt wash anymoreBenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Re: Cycle to work??
Haven't RM calculated it with a ridiculous 20% buffer which is why legacy staff along with new starts cannot qualify for Benefits.Acca Dacca wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 18:00Yes they used that excuse before the last payrise - but legacy are nowhere near minimum wage so it doesnt wash anymoreBenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

I imagine RM are trying to use this in the ODM talks and if/when any agreement is reached it will be reviewed

Re: Cycle to work??
Out of interest why is it a gamble, they know our rate of pay and the MW, so all they have to do is tell each employee you can spend £x once they've calculated the difference between the two figures?BenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

Re: Cycle to work??
As pointed out, the calculation uses a buffer or "margin" as this reply (edited) from HR explains regarding POAL;
" The check can only look at basic pay and must ensure that no colleague’s hourly rate could fall below the legal minimum at any point during the year. That means we have to consider what could change during the year and apply a margin to cover those changes. This margin has to cover all possibilities and when applied to the check significantly increase the likelihood of someone not passing the check."

Re: Cycle to work??
The affordability checks are dictated by the lowest paid job in Royal Mail - if a legacy terms postie switched to working in customer experience or HR, which is entirely plausible and happens semi-regularly, they'd soon find they couldn't afford the salary sacrifice they'd contractually signed up to with third parties and the business would have to fund the payments.

Out of interest, how much do Customer Experience or HR types get paid?loyalsnail wrote: ↑27 Feb 2026, 06:38The affordability checks are dictated by the lowest paid job in Royal Mail - if a legacy terms postie switched to working in customer experience or HR, which is entirely plausible and happens semi-regularly, they'd soon find they couldn't afford the salary sacrifice they'd contractually signed up to with third parties and the business would have to fund the payments.

And then you go sick a couple of times and your wages go down below minimum wage.TopperGas wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 19:24Out of interest why is it a gamble, they know our rate of pay and the MW, so all they have to do is tell each employee you can spend £x once they've calculated the difference between the two figures?BenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

Re: Cycle to work??
That doesn't matter, as long as your pay goes down proportional to your time absent as any time you spend unpaid whilst not working is ignored.Hitcher wrote: ↑27 Feb 2026, 08:19And then you go sick a couple of times and your wages go down below minimum wage.TopperGas wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 19:24Out of interest why is it a gamble, they know our rate of pay and the MW, so all they have to do is tell each employee you can spend £x once they've calculated the difference between the two figures?BenacreNick wrote: ↑26 Feb 2026, 17:29I believe RM can't gamble with staff potentially falling below minimum wage once the deductions have been calculated from wages Mac.

Re: Cycle to work??
Doubt it. Think we've seen the end of all salary sacrifice benefits.
A big well- done to the CWU for "negotiating" a 3 year pay cut for us last time round.
