A sleepy worker attacked a postman who tried to deliver a parcel at his home. Mason Luffman admitted attacking the postman in December last year in Tiverton.

The postman had been trying to deliver the parcel but no-one answered and the court heard Luffman was asleep in bed after working a series of night shifts.

But Exeter magistrates heard 28-year-old Luffman then opened the door and there was a verbal exchange before the postman put the parcel on the ground.

Luffman then repeatedly punched him in the face and head breaking his glasses and hearing aids.

The defendant went back into his house and the postman was left with significant bruising and was off his round for a week.

Luffman went to the police and told them he had "seen red" and struck the postman four or five times.

Jeremy Wickham, defending, said Luffman had just finished three days working on 12-hour night time shifts when he was woken up that morning.

He said the parcel was left on the ground and Luffman "saw red and just lost control".

Magistrates said Luffman, of Newport Street, will be sentenced in March when they have a probation report.
