Sharp-nosed postal workers have helped police intercept a delivery of drugs in 21 parcels sent to Kettering from the USA after noticing a suspicious smell emanating from one of the packages they had taken receipt of that day.

Staff at the Royal Mail sorting office in Trafalgar Road noticed the pungent pong coming from the packages and alerted Northants Police last month.

Police officers discovered the 21 packages contained 1.5kg of cannabis each, worth upwards of £315,000 in total.

PC Sam Orton, who attended the incident, said: “I’d like to thank the post office for acting so quickly to help us take these drugs off our streets and I hope this case sends a message to drug dealers that you cannot hide your criminal activities through our postal system.”

The haul of more than 31kg of cannabis seized on October 30 was seized and destroyed.

PC Orton added: “People often think that this sort of incident is victimless, but the fact is, this amount of cannabis will have involved serious and organised crime and most likely the exploitation of vulnerable people here and abroad.”
