A postwoman was left with a fractured skull and broken leg after being struck by a Jaguar driven by a 65-year-old motorist in South Shropshire, a court has heard.

Michael Gill, of Ludlow, appeared before Telford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Shakeel Ahmed told the court the incident happened on the B4367 at Little Common, near Craven Arms, on April 10 last year.

The Royal Mail employee had parked her van with hazard lights flashing and was wearing a high-visibility jacket when she stepped out to open a sliding side door.

As she did so, the wing mirror of Gill’s Jaguar F-Pace struck her, knocking her into the air.

“She was knocked off her feet into the air and landed on the floor,” Mr Ahmed said.

The victim, aged in her 50s, suffered a fractured skull, a broken leg and multiple bruises. She was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

Gill, who was driving at around 40mph in a 60mph zone, told police he had not seen the van or the postwoman until it was too late.

He said sunlight had been in his eyes and he had been momentarily distracted by adjusting his radio.

The court heard Gill has no previous convictions.

District Judge Kevin Grego remanded him on unconditional bail ahead of a case management hearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court on November 20.

He faces a single charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
