Van-What a laugh-Smooth knows it all.
Or in this case very little.
Ultimately referred to a 600 in RM!
Why don’t you enlighten us then? What exactly is/was a “600”? Does it refer to gross weight or payload in old money? Is it an old Leyland/Daf vehicle? What are RM talking about with all this MGV (Medium Goods Vehicle) stuff? I’m all ears!

I think it referred to the capacity in cubic feet, iirc you told me a while ago you briefly bought and sold the ldv vans, I think they were classed as a 150 and the larger 3.5 ton twin rear wheeled version was a 400.
Yes, you are right. But I was waiting for our antagonist to enlighten us. Indeed, I was picturing in my mind’s eye an old Leyland Roadrunner complete with low window in the cab — fun things to drive but very bouncy when unladen. The Scanias of the 1980s are my favourite, though I have a soft spot for the old Ford/IvecoCargos and Mercs of the same era.
Were you a “van” driver or someone who couldn’t hack it in the legal field?
I can’t keep up :hmmmm
No one asked you to keep up!

My father had a transport firm for many years hence my Class C licence — gained a matter of weeks past my 21st birthday. I spent my formative years — and beyond — messing about with (and earning from) all things transport. I have been a van driver, truck driver, general dogsbody, van/car washer, etc, etc. Enlighten us, when did you pass your LGV? What real wagons have you driven?

As for not being able to “hack it in the legal field”? Yeah, I’ll gladly concede that point. For over 20 years I was very successful, but following the illness and eventual death of a very close family member I found I really didn’t have the mental space or capacity to do that sort of work anymore. I don’t think there is any shame in that, though you are welcome to reach whatever conclusion you like :wave

jagger another bitter old timer looking down their nose at relative newcomers to the job. You will get no sympathy from them Smooth. They don’t even believe mental illness is a real thing given the lack of sympathy they have shown in previous posts here. Still at least they are in the job and I’m presuming haven’t been banned multiple times on here before, unlike our other resident muppet.

Yes, indeed. Lots of bitterness from a select few on here, Lou. I don’t need to justify or convince others as to the truthfulness and veracity of what I’m saying though. I could post pictures to corroborate what I’m saying — as I have done on many previous occasions on this site for other matters — but what would be the point? I couldn’t give two hoots for SkiSunday’s or Jagger’s views or opinions. Neither of them has a shred of life experience beyond RM, which makes them very sad, bitter and ignorant individuals whose opinions are wholly irrelevant to most on this forum. Anyway, enough digression methinks.

The thread now reads like the world's worst van and truck wikipedia page.

I only clicked to see if DPD were good to work for :Boo hoo!
As long as nobody posts a link to 'Tractor' porn it should be fine......

Guys if you’re struggling with this job like I was, get out asap (especially if you’re young!).

Now, I work 4 days a week, earn a little more, in the dry, with managers that actually treat you like a human being.

Seriously, don’t waste your life at RM. Looking back, I wish I’d got out sooner.
Do you mind me asking what it is you’re doing now? I’m currently looking for jobs as I’m knackered all the time! Cheers

He's keeping the green grass mown next door.
Has any postie ever left and said "leaving was the worst thing I ever did"?
Even the ones who slink back come out with some old tosh about the firm moving or being made redundant.

Can't you look into other jobs within RM? Maybe try get on wagons? Would nneed to get the licence first though if you don't have it already.
This.

The work is incredibly easy especially on nights, and you get double the pay, paid weekly.

And that's outside Central London.
Is that a royal mail vacancy?
Yup

That happened to me, to be fair. When I first passed my HGV I was eager to start racking up experience and Royal Mail had now going so I left. The company I went to lured me with promises of "all your stuff being loaded, you just need to check manifest and deliver, new vehicles, company is going places and expanding" etc but the management of it was dog s**t and they constantly gave you too much work to do. And there was definitely no union. I was ready to quit after a couple of months but got made redundant in that time and got a mediocre payoff, and went back to royal mail.

Went back to being a postie. Because I'd rather be a postie than do all that again.

I'm on the wagons now on nights and thoroughly enjoy it.

And looking back, I shouldn't have left until more vacancies came up at Royal Mail.

Driving a different type of wagon is monthly paid.
It can be very long hours and some can’t adapt.
If you mean driving a 600, that is different.
Fixed it for you.

When someone says "on the wagons", 99% of people are referring to 7.5t.

Just as when people want to know about 17t and Artics they specifically say so

You're quite right to point out that that 17t and Artics are in a different pay schedule.

Honestly though I've never known someone become so militantly pedantic about something like this.

You and your white knight, Lou Barlow, couldn’t be more wrong. Plenty of life experience outside Royal Mail. Didn’t have to work for family either.
You both have always had a lot to say for yourselves but get all high and mighty when someone questions you.
You must be hell to live or work with.

Oh, you didn’t have to work for family? Good for you. You do you, I’ll do me.

I’m glad I had my old dad to set me on the right path in my formative years. He did the same for all of his kids. We were taught to drive, expected to help out with dad’s work, shown the value of hard work and money, etc, etc. It’s called giving your kids a guiding hand and showing them the right path, akin to, “Well, if you’re going to doss around, you’ll be coming to help out in the yard unless and until something better comes along.” It’s what good parents do. I’m truly sorry for you that you’ve not had the benefit of that sort of parenting.

Questioning is fine, but ganging up and bullying female new-starters in this job, is pathetic and I will call it out each time I see it. And yes, I am both a delight to live with and work alongside.
