Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon said he is "furious" after Royal Mail announced profits - despite cutting key services.
Tom has accused Royal Mail of “betraying their customers” after the company confirmed they had returned a profit for the first time in three years.
Last month, Royal Mail announced plans to cut back their services by only delivering second-class letters on every other weekday and not on Saturdays.
Tom said he has been contacted by numerous constituents, particularly in rural areas and villages, about serious postal delays.
He said:
“In one village, residents are receiving mail only once a week – if at all – leaving people missing bills, medical appointments, and other essential correspondence.
“Local businesses are also suffering, with invoices and important documents failing to arrive on time.”
Tom has twice written to Royal Mail’s leadership to demand answers and improvements, but is yet to receive a response.
Tom Gordon said:
“Slow post is a real issue for my constituents and I am furious with Royal Mail for cutting back their crucial second-class post service, despite being in profit.
“It’s a kick in the teeth for local communities, and for hard-working posties doing a great job despite having to work for a leadership that is failing them.
“Simply put, Royal Mail are betraying their customers and it is completely unacceptable. I will continue to fight for residents in my constituency who deserve punctual, regular deliveries.”
The Liberal Democrats have also previously criticised Ofcom for ‘letting Royal Mail off the hook’ by allowing them to abandon second class deliveries.
