Royal Mail has provided an update regarding its procedures when a person appears to be receiving no postal deliveries. The statement follows a social media post from someone claiming they had received no letters for nearly two weeks.

They claimed that they decided to visit their local delivery office, where they were given 12 pieces of mail. Following this incident, Royal Mail was asked about what people should do if their post appears not to be reaching their address.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We understand how frustrating it can be when letters are delayed. We want to reassure customers that the vast majority of First Class mail arrives the next working day."

The company said that where First Class items are delayed, 92 per cent will arrive within two days, while 99 per cent of items will be delivered within five days. However, the postal service also cautioned that customers may experience several days without any deliveries.

The spokesman said: "As the volume of letters has fallen dramatically over the past decade, it is now increasingly common to go several days without receiving any post if nothing is expected. However, if you have concerns about missing mail, please get in touch and we will investigate."

First Class items are expected to arrive by the following working day, plus an extra day if redirection is necessary. Royal Mail targets delivery of Second Class items within two to three working days, plus an extra working day when redirection is required.

If an item has not arrived by the expected date plus a minimum of 10 working days, you might be eligible to claim compensation. This can be done through the Royal Mail website.

If you have a reference number, you can monitor the status of your delivery using the 'Track your item' feature on the Royal Mail website. In such instances, if your item's status is 'ready for delivery', it should reach your address during the next delivery round.

Royal Mail may also choose not to deliver an item if it's considered unsafe, such as in adverse weather conditions or if there's a dangerous dog on the property. Another reason it may not be possible to deliver your mail is if the address is inaccessible, for instance, if the letterbox isn't reachable. The postperson may also not be able to post your item if there's a door entry security system installed.

Yep royal mail still lying to the customers. It's being held like it has done for years. Then it is often sitting in a tray or frame until it finally gets delivered. Then the customer gets 9 letters all at once. This isn't a volume dropping thing. It's a cost cutting, service f***ing, royal mail thing.

I did like how they didn't mention that Redirection is now Second Class, not first class - so all items that go via Redirection are now on Second Class delivery times not First Class.

How hard would it be to tweak the system so it releases mail once it hits say 5 seperate pieces of maill?

The CSS machines only recive a list of DPs with 1C due that day from the central server. The CSS machines don't keep any count of how many items it has sorted for any given DP. To do what you suggest would need for the mail to go through an additional time to enable an machine to look at how many 2C for every DP.

Over the last week or so I've noticed that there has been a change in the "kill off" stickers with a new option "Stop and return" added, what's that used for?

btw are DOs killing off mail for schools and colleges where they're shut? Seen a good few items for schools and colleges that have been killed off as inaccessible.

Stop and return is an in flight service we offer to companies who don't want the receiver to get the item after it has been dispatched. Usually because the payment didn't go thru correctly or they changed their mind on the item and it saves it being delivered and then returned by the customer.

Every year schools get the letter and every year most posties just leave the items on top of the frames for 6 weeks whether the school paid for a keepsafe or not. Some days over zealous managers go round the frames and kill off the mail if there's no instruction in place. Most of the time they can't be bothered as there's coffee to be drunk from the machine....
